チャンスをつかもうと頑張る娘にいちゃもんをつけるのは酷というものだ。セールスの減少を経験した後のジュエルは前向きな姿勢を示し、メイクと芸風を一新した。ただし、この愛すべき歌姫が未知の領域に跳びこんだのは、この『0304』が初めてではない。シャキーラのプロデューサーであるレスター・A・メンデスの起用により、ジュエルらしいまじめなフォーク調の作風にポップな輝きといくぶんかのダンス・ビートが加味されている本作だが、彼女がアン・リー監督の映画『楽園をください』に南北戦争時代の未亡人役で主演したときのラジカルさにはかなわない。しかし、ぴったりとした胴着とフープ・スカート姿で歩き回るジュエルを銀幕で観るよりも、先鋭的で大言壮語な内容を持つ寓話「Intuition」でアコーディオン・ソロに乗って持ち前の伸びやかで清潔感のある声を押しつぶすような発声をしたり、ビートの効いた「America」でブッシュ政権を糾弾したりする彼女を聴くほうがずっと興味深いのだ。

やっぱりジュエルは。。。

　とにかく買ってみた。以前からジュエルがダンスアルバムを出すとは聞いていたけれど。。。
　曲的には全体的に良いメロディーなんだけれど、やっぱりダンスアルバムにするなら、もっと他との違いを出してほしかった。
レコード会社も思い切ったことを許したなと思う。それほどジュエルの熱烈なファンというわけではないから、まいっかで済むけれど熱心なファンはどう思うのだろうか。
　YOU WERE MEANT FOR MEみたいな曲はもう歌わないのかな。。。

私はこのアルバムからの
ファンではありません。
しかし、このアルバムは
凄く好きです。
『pieces of you』
『spirit』の様な
サウンドが好きで
シングルの『INTUITION』
しか聴かないで
食わず嫌いしている方々!!
1度この『アルバム』を
聴いて見てください。
歌詞もアイドル達の曲とは
全く異なっており、
pieces〜の頃よりも
ソングライティングのスキルは
確実に上達していると
思います。
JEWELは変わったしまった
なんて思っているかも
しれませんが、
この世界に1歩足を
踏み入れたならば、
貴方の思う様なJEWELが
待って居るかも
しれませんよ(^^)

今までの「ジュエルらしさ」を頑なに好きだった方々にとっては、
裏切られたような気持ちになるかもしれませんが、
私は、それほど彼女らしさは失われてなく、むしろ自然だと思います。

人間にはいろんな面があると思いますので、

ある意味、自己のアーティストとしての特質をかなぐり捨てたジュエル最高のポップ・ミュージックがここにあります。私的には１st、２ndと共に彼女の最高傑作だと思います。地味にシックの剃刀のCMに使われた『イントゥイション（直感）』やメロディアスな曲ばかりでどれもシングル化できます。もっと評価されるべき作品です。歌詞だってとってもメッセージ性に富んでいて良品なんだから！！
当時売れっ子プロデューサーのレスター・メンデスを起用しています。

フォークやカントリーではないアイドルなジュエルはこのアルバムでしか聴けません。
YouTubeで１度イントゥイション（直感）』を検索することをお薦めします。

Some artists have bland voices and only get record sales after a menagerie of electronic effects are applied to the vocals. Some musicians lack virtuosity and only scrape by in the industry because computers correct all their mistakes. Jewel fits into neither of these categories, so you could argue that in 0304 she is showing the pop and dance worlds how an album in this genre really should be done, but rather than succeeding in this venture she sounds like a fish out of water.
The production is shallow, the tracks lack depth, and the album leaves you feeling like it was only a demo, not the final retail version.
This is not saying that I disliked all of the songs, "Leave The Lights On" and "Fragile Heart" are my favourites. And the opening of "2 Find U" is terrific. But these are the less pop inspired tracks, so it's not a surprise I liked them. The acoustic guitar in "Fragile Heart" gets really quite folky in places, and this is the direction in which Jewel always succeeds. On the other hand, "U & Me=Love" is a good demonstration of why Jewel's voice and pop do not go together, and "America" was obviously written on a whim and good sense left her when she included it on the album.
Jewel was perhaps following her heart, her intuition, when firsting teaming up with Mendez to record 0304. However, intuition has led her astray, like the digital world and the big city has lured a girl away from her roots which in this album she is clearly denying.
What made Jewel's earlier albums special was the folk, the raw live-feel to the music, the intimacy achieved by just guitar and vocals on key tracks. The sound of musicians who really know their instruments and have many opportunities to shine as much as the singer, is totally lost in the electronic computerised digital editing world of 0304. Jewel has an enormously expressive voice that has the power to bring a grown man to tears, but subduing that voice and applying electronic affects to it just to fit into the modern pop idiom is a big step in the wrong direction.
If there's any advice Jewel should listen to, it's not "follow your intuition" because your heart is so easily swayed in any direction, but "find your roots and don't lose them". Don't go with any musical style just because you love them all, that's just fickle. And musicianship is as important to a good track as the song.
This is no longer a unique folk singer from Alaska, this is a pop chick from Hollywood - and they're two a penny. As a long time Jewel fan, her album "Pieces Of You" still remains my firm favourite.
