5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for anyone looking to learn more about mastering and Wavelab!
Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2020
I have not finished the book yet, but since there are no reviews I will leave one based on what I have read so far! The information presented is outstanding. The author has a heart to teach the people reading it and comes at it from the standpoint that anyone can be a mastering engineer and he hopes to help the reader get there. While some other well-known mastering books (to me) tend to talk down to the reader and throw out terms without explaining them further, this author goes into the nitty-gritty of all things audio related to mastering and audio. I am currently reading a section about metering and he explains in a phenomenal way the differences between dBSPL, dBu, dBV, etc., and what terms like Full Scale indicate. I have never come across such a comprehensive resource on the minute audio details that I love.

The examples the author provides for Wavelab are also superb. He walks you through each exercise in an informative and practical way. The audio examples are entertaining and sometimes straight up hilarious and random but are really fun to listen to, rather than the monotonous and repetitive examples that I have experienced in other educational pieces. I would recommend the author/publisher would provide answers to some of the examples. For example, in one of the first exercises the task is to identify which processing is occurring between examples and there is no way of checking the correct answers (that I have seen).

One of the minor drawbacks of this publication is the translation (but not enough of a drawback to give it 4 stars!). This book was translated from Italian and, while overall this does not usually seriously impact the comprehensibility of the text, the current translation does leave some of the wording and sentences feeling awkward and hard to understand. If the publisher or author reads this review, I would simply recommend having a native English speaker just quickly go over and re-word many of the confusingly written sentences in a second edition print of this book.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book if you are looking to increase your knowledge about mastering in the box and learn more about Wavelab!
