1902年5月24日、神戸市生まれ。旧制大阪薬専卒。26年、博文館に入社。「新青年」「探偵小説」の編集長を歴任し、32年に退社後、文筆活動に入る。信州での療養、岡山での疎開生活を経て、戦後は探偵小説雑誌「宝石」に、『本陣殺人事件』(第一回探偵作家クラブ賞長編賞)、『獄門島』、『悪魔の手毬唄』などの名作を次々と発表。76年、映画「犬神家の一族」で爆発的横溝ブームが到来、今もなお多くの読者の支持を得ている。81年、永眠。
