最初から最後までここまでのめり込んで読めた小説は初めて。
初めは「こんなおかしな考え方をする人がいるのか」と半ば見世物を見つけたような怖いもの見たさがあった。サイコホラーサスペンスの映画を見ている時の、薄気味悪くも脳が興奮した状態に近い感覚だった。
しかし読んでいるうちに、主人公・葉蔵が捉える歪んだ世界と、自分が日頃感じているこの世の不条理とに、合致する部分が幾つも出てくる。
初めはあんなにわからなかった葉蔵の考え方に、次第に、自分を重ねていってしまう。葉蔵に自分の暗部を投影し、その堕落していく姿に心を痛め、それと同時に自分の汚い部分が文章化され、晒されていることに気付いた時、僕自身冷や汗が止まらなかった。
中盤以降、そんな自分の暗部を直視する意味での怖いもの見たさが、読み進める手を止めなかった。
読後感はすっきりとしたものではないし、影響を受けやすい自分のような人間は間違いなく落ち込む。けれどこの小説にはそれでもなお人を惹きつけて離さない魅力がある。
