If you are into Asian Pop music, like me and thousands of others, you owe it to yourself to listen to two songs from this album. First, Mai Tian Bu Shou or "Catcher in the Rye" song. This song is in Chinese followed by English. Ann's unique haunting voice and a completely original song will surprise you. Asian music critics consider her a rising star. The next song "Shi Shen Mo Rang Wo Yu Jian Zhe Yang De Ni" receives the most air play and attention. It is completely in Chinese but it doesn't matter. The melody, her voice and the tone will make you want to listen over and over. You will download the album after you hear these two great songs.
The remainder of the album is almost as good as these two songs. A couple of the songs include english lyrics thrown in and one song even has some very fluent German. Just a reminder...this is a Chinese Language album. Many English listeners are fascinated by asian Pop music because the Music is more complex and the lyrics still matter in the songs. American songs are defined by 3 or 4 chords and lyrics that you can't understand except for the "hook". You know, the "baby, baby, baby" part.
I listen to asian music frequently and have several favorite artists. After about 30 seconds of listening to Catcher in the Rye, I musically fell in love with Ann.
Her voice reminds me a bit of Dido, Sarah MacLachlan, and Emiliana Torrini. It's very beautiful and soulful.
Then I listened to her other tunes and it just became way too much for me. Not just singing style but the compositions, arrangements, everything is just too Dido. Even if this is really a complete coincidence, which I find hard to believe because of Dido's worldwide popularity, if any western musician does this, she will be immediately labeled as a Dido-wanna-be, or even a plagiarizer. I have been looking for talented, original Mandarin female singer-songwriters, and when I first heard Ann Bai I thought she was a real good one, but now I almost feel like I got kicked in the head.
