I have bought this as a present for my eldest son who was born in 1972 and grew up with the wonderful BBC series Monkey Magic as did the rest of my children. This CD is the fantastic music that used to play during the series - which was the tale of how the Chinese Buddhist monk Tripitaka and the Monkey King, Sandy a water spirit, and Pigsie another spirit, travelled to India to bring back the Buddhist scrolls to China. Lots of adventures and fighting with monsters on the way and very funny and clever - on two levels - one that can be enjoyed by adults (dry humour) and very well dubbed - and one that can be enjoyed by children. This will bring back good memories - it is good rock music in its own right.
I was only a child, but remember "Monkey" on TV with great fondness, I had never heard the original version of "Gandhara" with all English lyrics, only the half-Japanese version that hides the Buddhist nature of the track. Definitely a product of its era, just when we were going Asian crazy (anyone remember Karate soap on a rope :P)
When the TV show Monkey made an appearance on the BBC over 30 years ago, i really enjoyed it. I made enquiries at my local record shop for the soundtrack and got the tape released through BBC Enterprises. I really enjoyed that too. i have on occasion watched Monkey when shown on TV and listened to the music on a semi regular basis, while recently searching for the album on CD. the downside is that the only place where I could get the CD is from Japan and the price is quite high for a CD. I still enjoyed the CD despite the price
