内容紹介

The Daitoryu is a brutally effective fighting method thought to have been first developed more than a thousand years ago by members of the Japanese imperial family. It was then refined and honed in great secrecy through centuries of hand-to-hand combat by highly trained warriors. Its techniques were jealously guarded until late in the nineteenth century, when it was first introduced to the world by master Sokaku Takeda, who began to accept students from around the country.

It was this tradition that Morihei Ueshiba spent years studying just before he set out on his own to found Aikido-which has in recent years become one of the world's most popular martial arts. The roots of Aikido are in the Daitoryu, and for that reason Aikido practitioners will want to learn all they can about this martial art.

The Hidden Roots of Aikido is the first book to appear in English that offers a detailed visual introduction to techniques of the Daitoryu tradition. Heavily illustrated with approximately 800 photographs, it gives a clear, complete picture of the steps involved in about 90 techniques. Its substantial section on history and theory takes a close look at the Daitoryu's historical background and philosophy, while a glossary of terms provides a handy list of the most important terms.

The Hidden Roots of Aikido will be an indispensable learning tool for students of the Daitoryu, and a valuable reference for other martial arts practitioners.

著者について

Shiro Omiya studied Aiki Jujutsu Daitoryu with Kozui Tsuruyama, a second-generation disciple of Sokaku Takeda, the master who first introduced the Daitoryu to the world.

Kodansha has a reputation for producing outstanding martial arts books however this book which was published in the 1990's has some shortcomings that if overcome in future editions would make this an outstanding reference book. Many of the photos are difficult to follow because they are too small and/or the contrast is poor. Some of these shortcomings are overcome by excellent discussions of the techniques. These shortcomings would be less of a problem with practitioners with experience in Daitoryu, Hapkido, Aikido but new students to the art might have difficulty. The techniques would be of great interest to students and instructors of other arts such as Hapkido, Aikido, JuJutsu, Bujinkan Taijutsu, Arnis, and Chin Na. A very good book as reference material in any serious martial artist library.
5つ星のうち 3.0 Good reference for Aikido and Daito-ryu practioners 2013/7/14

As a practioner of Daito-ryu, this book offers a condensed history of the art but leaves a big gap between the foundation of Daito-ryu and the creation of Aikido techniques including the principles of how and why the techniques were created. Experienced practioners will have a better understanding of the techniques represented in this book. The section that includes the definitions of Japanese is worth buying the book for alone. Overall, it is a good reference book to be included in a martial artist's library.

simply put, this is a manual book on the direct predecessor of AiKiDo. And the presentation technique is quite good, simple and clear at it.

This serves as a fine introduction into one of the oldest martial arts and systems of Japan, with a brief history and some explanation as well as some demonstrated techniques.
