I recently saw Mr Kishi on Japanese television. They were showcasing Japanese artists and their art. I loved the idea of Edo-era robots and fell instantly in love with all of the examples of his work shown. I was delighted to find that he'd published several books, and I bought them all.
If you have his other works, then you'll see that this new book collects elements from all of them, excepting his storybook, 六人の家来. This book most mimics the style of 愉快な機械, including the excellent, updated creation-process section in the back (I wish more artists did this! Fantastic!). If you have his previous works, not everything is included.
Although this book includes older pieces, the photographs are much larger, and show many angles. Also, in the how-to section it shows you which parts of models used what bits. There are some new pieces here, but it seems to me that Mr Kishi has moved more towards digital creations, which I like, but not as much as his Edo-robots. An interesting addition is a version of the 3-D photocopy machine that I've seen over the past few years here in Japan: Basically, feed the machine 3-D images and it will produce the tangible creation. Very interesting.
In summary, buy this book if you are new to his work. Having the older ones give a more complete picture, but this includes enough that you will not feel shorted at all!
