First of all, if you are not the DIY type hobbyist and do not have a Spektrum type transmitter / FPV monitor / goggle already, the Blade Inductrix FPV RTF drone would be a nice choice for you as it comes with a controller and FPV monitor.
The FPV monitor is a Spektrum 4.3 inch monitor which is quite nice in terms of sharpness and reception. This monitor can be mounted on the controller with a built-in rechargeable battery which is charged through a micro USB port. The monitor is capable of supporting four bands of frequencies (Fatshark, Raceband, group A, and group E). However the Blade Inductrix's VTX (video transmitter) only supports the Fatshark and Raceband frequencies so only 2 bands can be used. The display would shows the monitor's battery status and signal strength but not much other than that.
The Inductrix FPV drone
One reason the Blade Inductrix became so popular was due to its duct fan like frame which makes it easy to fly indoors and bumping into objects without losing control of the drones. For those who have flown mini or micro sized drones before, they would appreciate the maneuverability and bump-proof characteristics of the Inductrix. The Blade Inductrix also uses a SAFE® technology with self-leveling makes it easy to stay in control. The Blade Inductrix FPV version has a camera mounted with improved motors over the original Inductrix which makes it flies like a Tiny Whoop. What I like is that the camera is securely mounted with a protective case so it does not fall off easily upon crashes. The camera angle is not adjustable but it still works quite well with its wide field of view without the need to adjust the camera angle. The video transmitter's frequency can be changed by pressing a button on the top of the frame (long press to change band and short press to change the channels). If you choose, you can still use a Specktrum transmitter and a goggle to fly this toy.
The Blade Inductrix controller
The controller is pretty standard as compared to other mini / micro drones. We would need to bind the controller to the drone every time it is connected to the power. The procedure is pretty straight-forward (press the left stick in and power on). We can also change the rate (fast vs slow) by pressing the right stick in once. There are trim buttons but the display would not show the trim positions. You could identify the trim position by listening to its tone pitch when the trim buttons are pressed. With the Inductrix flying so stable, I seldom need to use these trim buttons anyway. A couple of notes related to the controller binding. This drone has what they called a "smart bind feature" which "should" do automatic binding if you turn on the transmitter, wait for 5 seconds, and then connect the battery to the drone. I found that this procedure is not very reliable. But the good thing is that the manual binding procedure (as described above) is pretty straight-forward. The other note it mentioned was that we should put the drone on a level surface within 2 seconds after the battery is connected in order for it to do an automatic gyro calibration. This is an important step to keep to mind to avoid unstable flights.
The Blade Inductrix actually flies quite well in comparison to other mini-micro sized drones. If you have never flown a drone before, it would not be fair to complain about how difficult it is to fly as you would find it probably more challenging with other drones. In terms of flight time, I was quite pleased to see that I was able to get about 3:20 minutes of flight time (using the slow rate settings) with the stock battery and 4 minutes of flight time using the Nitro Nectar 210 mAh Lipo which is a popular battery for the Tiny Whoop. The flight time on my Tiny Whoop is about the same when I used the same Lipo to test it.
Comparison with my Tiny Whoop build.
I built a Tiny Whoop from the original Blade Inductrix with an upgrade Beebrain flight controller and a FX797T camera / VTX combo. This Tiny Whoop is real fun to fly and you can even do Acro with it using Betaflight to customize its settings. The Blade Inductrix is somewhat limited as there is not much you can customize with its controller in terms of flight characteristics and settings.
Overall, I am quite please with the Blade Inductrix FPV RTF drone. It would fit very well for the beginning / intermediate flyers who want to get into FPV flights. For the more advanced drone hobbyists, the Tiny Whoop would still be a preferred choice due to the amount of customization you can do with it.
This is one tough little drone. It might feel delicate and fragile when holding it but it can take a beating. I smacked it hard enough against a wall that the video channel changed and it kept going. With the trim set, it hovers better than my Parrot Mambo and other micro drones I have tried. However, is does not have a sensor to help with lift so it does take some practice to keep it level. The only other issue you will encounter with flight is when changing batteries. All batteries are not made equal and the trim might need some adjusting with each battery.
Setting up the video was easier than I expected and works great, as long as you have enough light. I would not suggest flying this in the dark using just video. The camera does not have an audio input so you will need to turn down the volume on the monitor.
I am happy with my purchase. I have more fun with this little guy each time a use it. This kit is convenient for anyone wanting to get his or her feet wet in the FPV flying hobby. As the box says, this is not a toy so keep that in mind if you are purchasing this for a child.
I'm a ham and thought maybe it was lingering RF from my station - which makes no sense when the everything is turned off and grounded but whatever. I really want this thing to work! So this morning I brought the it to my woodshop across town and it does the same thing, screaming and flipping out and skittering across the floor whether the controller is on or not.
Additionally, on all three machines the propellers would fly off when they felt like it, and they are very hard to find. I was afraid if I lost one, I would not be able to return it this increasingly unwanted smidge of plastic.
Far as I can tell, this is just a cheap, overpriced toy for people who are never going to try to use it - and I'm sure a lot of people don't. It should come in a McDonald's Happy Meal. Judging by the reviews, I guess it works for some people - and I believe it, because I was told by two different racing hobbyists to buy it. But I am sending this third one back for a full refund. I'm done. Three strikes you're out. Very disappointed. Guess we'll have to find another way into the hobby.
I'm willing to acknowledge my lack of experience, but the fact that each of three quads presented a completely different insurmountable difficulty tells me these are mass produced with very little attention paid to quality control. Each one of these came in a box that had what looked like after market tape closing the box, like the company was repackaging returns. Maybe they're overwhelmed by the holidays. Whatever the reason, they lost me, and I hope this review stops a few other people from buying one, because frankly, I'm a bit pissed off. Merry Christmas, indeed.
That said, I do appreciate Amazon's return policy. Thanks for that. Great Company, Amazon.
