アメリカがヴェトナム戦争に深入りするきっかけともなった1965年11月のイア・ドラン渓谷の戦い。しかし、そこには敵味方を問わず多くの尊い命が失われていったことを描く戦争超大作。原作者のひとりで実際に参戦したハル・ムーア大佐（当時）をメル・ギブソンが人間味豊かに演じており、また彼の妻（マデリーン・ストウ）が毎日戦死者通知を自ら配達するエピソードを挿入し、戦争は男だけのものではないと強調。さらには敵である北ヴェトナム正規軍にも家族がいて恋人がいるという、そんな当然の事実をアメリカ映画が初めて描いた画期的作品でもある。
本作のようにアジア人の会話に英語字幕を入れることなど、これまでの米製ヴェトナム戦争映画ではほとんどなかった。なお、この苛酷な戦いに勝利したアメリカは、おごり高ぶった勢いでもはや後戻りできなくなり、敵味方さらなる悲劇が繰り広げられていった。監督は『パール・ハーバー』の脚本家でもあるランダル・ウォレス。（的田也寸志）

この映画は一度昔テレビで見た記憶があり、ずっと前から欲しいと思っていました。何度見ても飽きない、ベトナム戦争を扱った映画では私は一番だと思います。

戦争ものの中では高評価を付けられる映画だと
思う。迫力のある戦闘シーンは数ある戦争ものの
中でも結構いけているほうだと思う。まあ、戦争もの
を見る人はそれを求めているとは思うけど。プライベート
ライアンの戦闘シーンも結構いいと思うけど、これは
それと同じくらい。

この作品はこれまで見てきたベトナム戦争を描いた映画の中でも、最高傑作と言っても過言ではありません。作品の作られた経緯や演出も他の作品とは異なり、真実を伝える事への取り組み等が本格的でとても感動しました。

This Film is based on Hal Moore's Book about the Battle of La Drang in 1965..so highly authentic!
Im staggered some Critics mock Gibsons acting yet he is very convincing...Critics also claim the film insults the Vietnamese yet this is false...they are shown to be brilliant and brave Soldiers who would have won but for America's superior air support!
The Film's authentic brutality is softened by scenes with the Families but even that becomes tragic when the dreaded Telegrams arrive via Taxis
No Film is perfect and no War Film is neutral...ever seen the good side of the Vietnamese in Platoon or Deer Hunter?
It is a unique Film,showing the first Battle of the Vietnam War in all its horrible violence and mindless bloody waste!!

Sold and delivered by Amazon; undamaged; new, shrink-wrapped. Sourced from the book "We Were Soldiers Once, and Young" by retired LT.GEN. Hal Moore (co-written with Joseph L. Galloway, newspaper correspondent and columnist - including for Knight-Ridder media, the ONLY newspaper publishers to write the truth about the Saddam Hussein Weapons of Mass Destruction lies, and fake intelligence that led to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He is portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones, and appears as himself, in the 2017 true story film account "Shock and Awe".) We Were Soldiers is a dramatisation of the Battle of la Drang, in 1965, during the Vietnam War. With excellent cinematography and action choreography; although a realistic portrayal of many facts in the book, it does stray, to an extent, from historical accuracy. However, the author Moore approved of the film, so it would be a losing battle to be at odds with his appraisal. Intense, and bloody. I put this above Apocalypse Now/Redux, the only other accurate portrayal US involvement in the war I know of - which includes an airborne attack resulting in a massacre of civilians in a Vietnam village. Both recommended, but knowing that around 58,000 US military personnel lost their lives in the war, in comparison to over 2 million Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Laosians.

I have not watched the movie for years, I originally bought it when it was first released on DVD. Well that copy went to the charity shop many years ago and I just fancied watching it again. The steelbook was at a good price and thought it would look good in my collection. The film as I remember is very good and worth seeing especially if you are unfamiliar with wars and the harrowing experience that these people of previous generations endured. I am looking forward to watching it again.

The late ninety's and early noughties brought an abundance of war film dramas which aimed to truly capture the horror's that occur on the battlefield and the bravery and heroism of the armed forces, this film is no different. Based on the bestseller 'We Were Soldiers Once..and Young' the film tells the true story of Col Harold Moore and his battalion during one of the first major American battles of the Vietnam War. Mel Gibson gives a truly breathtaking performance as Moore, a hard as nails officer who cares deeply about his battalion, essentially treating them (and expecting them to treat each other) as family. While the film may not be a true telling of the 'Battle of La Drang Valley', playing loosely with the ending, on the whole it a very worthy telling of the sacrifice that the men of the 7th Cavalry gave for their country. Filmed in a similar vain as Saving Private Ryan with plenty of 'running on foot' camera footage and gritty war scenes.

Gibson is also backed up by a stellar cast of Sam Elliot, Madeleine Stowe and Greg Kinnear

The co author of the book, Joseph Galloway (portrayed in the film by the brilliant Barry Pepper) also worked as an adviser on the film.

The BluRay offers solid video and audio (based on the US region free version) with a number of behind the scenes features which make an upgrade from DVD a no brainer

Can recommend viewing this and reading the book. Harrowing at the loss of life but gives an insight to the horrors of war in Vietnam. Two American helicopter pilots suggested we read this as an explanation of our questions about their roles in Vietnam. Hal was a legend and although Mel Gibson played his role well, they did not warm to him. Perhaps being an Australian did not help.
