このアルバムからデヴィッドボウイを知りました。それを差し引いても、良い作品です。
当時からコマーシャルな作風と言われ続けてきました。聴いてみたらわかりますが、後半に進むにつれ歪な音が出てきます。
充分にアーティスティックだと、今でも思っています。
素直にカッコ良いと言えますよ。

デヴィッド・ボウイは、25年くらい前にCD買い揃えてたけど、2010年代のリマスター盤に全て買い替えてます。
コロナのことで在宅勤務になったので、聴き直しながら思い切って実行して良かった。

デヴィッド・ボウイは1970年代から聴いています。その時代時代の空気を反映したアルバムはすべて大好きです。ですから、このアルバムをディスコにすり寄ったという批判をする方もおりますが、それでも構わない、私は大好きです。イギー・ポップのためにつくったチャイナ・ガール、軽快なモダン・ラヴ、圧巻はレッツ・ダンスと名曲ぞろい、ドライヴィングミュージックとしてもヘヴィー・ローテーションです。

デビッド・ボウイの訃報を聞いて、思い出したかのようにこのアルバムが聞きたくなった。
そして気が付けばポチってました。しかし、その時点で在庫切れとは、考える事はみんな同じだと笑った。
1983年は中学2年生だった。テープにダビングして本当にヘビーローテーションで聞いていた。
背伸びして大人の音楽を聞いて悦になっていた。
私のカセットテープではＡ面の最後の曲が終わると、超時空要塞マクロスのサントラからかぶせて録音したからマクロスのＢＧＭが流れた。
ちょうどアニメを卒業して、洋楽ロックに目覚めたころのお気に入りのアルバムの一つだった。
このアルバムを聞いていると、その他にもいろんなことを思い出した。飼ってた猫の事や友達の事、当時の暮らし。
そして、デビッド・ボウイが死んだのかと思うと、悲しくて泣いた。
泣いて、こんなに好きだったんだと驚いた。もっとデビッド・ボウイを深堀しよう。
俺の80年代の１人がまた去って行った。まだレミーの死から立ち直っていなかったのに。
モーターヘッドのAce of Spadesアルバムとこのアルバムをしばらく聞きまくろうと思う。
ご冥福をお祈りします。

David Bowieがそれまでのカルトスターからポップスターへと変貌した重要なアルバムです。当時流行していたニューロマやダンスミュージックへと接近したことで、それまでのカルトなBowieを愛する人からは邪道と見られがちですが、冷静に聴いてみると悪いアルバムではありません。1.Modern Loveがやや時代を感じさせるものの、いま聴いてもポップな良曲ですし、2.China GirlもIggy Popのものとは違い、明るくなっています。3.Let's Danceはスティービー・レイボーンのギターが聞き物です。6.Criminal WorldはMetroのカバーですが、原曲のスタイルを守りながらもBowie色に染まっています。7.Cat PeopleはDonna SummerやSparksなどを手がけたジョルジオ・モロダーとの共作で元々同一タイトルの映画の主題歌として発表。ここでは映画のバージョンと異なりますので、気に入った方は映画のサントラもチェックしてみて下さい。

I had the original David Bowie Lets Dance on vinyl when it debuted. I recently tried to find it in iTunes and it’s not available. So definitely stoked to have it in full on cd. I put it right in the car cd player which hasn’t been used in a while and it sounds fantastic!
It’s a classic that still holds up. One of Bowie’s best.

David Bowie was always someone more interested in changing bridges rather than crossing them. Strangely enough that's what happened with this album. Bowie crossed heavier over into pop than he had in a lot of ways with his Young Americans just under a decade before this and interesting enough that was primarily a Philly Soul/funk flavored recording. After that with the "Berlin" trilogy of Bowie albums in between this album is actually an 80's variation of the "plastic soul" Bowie had proclaimed his mid 70's period. As a result the music contains ovetones of the dissonant instrumentation and soundscapes of albums such as Heroes or even the previous album Scary Monsters along with prominant 80's disco-funk with an electronic touch. And therefore it's only fitting Bowie chose to produce this album together with Nile Rodgers,a man who came at funk,disco and R&B from the rock world. It's of course the drums of Omar Hakim and the excellent guitar riffs from than newbie Stevie Ray Vaughn that bring the title song alive,which makes great use of both the mild dissonance and dance-funk flavors-basically just a more radio friendly variation of the sound you'd hear on a song like "Fasion" from the previous album. The album ends on a similar note with "Shake It". This is a much more straight ahead new wave/funk jam that doesn't quite have either the lengh or the dissonant rock influence of the title track. It's played more cleanly and it shows you how,likely as a result of Nile's help how Bowie used this as an opportunity to remove the "plastic" from his "soul". "Modern Love","China Girl" and "Without You" are more typical 80's pop ala Madonna's Like a Virgin showcasing Bowie looking to simplify his persona to match the music and no irony is lost as his personality remains even more detached than it had before in the attempt. "Ricochet" with it's use of spoken word radio montages as well as "Criminal World" and of course "Cat People" are the most abstract and moody tunes here and in a lot of ways say a lot more about the cultural and artistic uncertainties of the early 80's than the more obviously pop ones. Perhaps it's this mix of styles and sense of irony that turns a lot of people off to this album because it uses poppier sounds to make it's point as opposed to being very obviously....subversive the way much of Bowie's earlier music tended to be.

David Bowie's 1983 album "Let's Dance", is a fantastic album. This album is different to previous albums, as it contains dance, Pop/Rock music. This album includes the singles "Let's Dance", "China Girl" & "Modern Love".

I will rate each track and explain why:-

1. Modern Love 10/10 - This is a fantastic start to the album, as its a good pop rock, dancing kind of song for the start of this dance album. It is notable to be similiar to Elton John's song "I'm Still Standing" which was recorded exactly the same time.

2. China Girl 10/10 - The newer version of Iggy Pop's version back in 1977 from the album "The Idiot". This song is really good! it sounds really good and the lyrics are good.

3. Let's Dance 10/10 - This song is really good as well. The song has a good beat all the way through, and a good bridge/chorus which makes it even more better. This song was made number 1 in 1983.

4. Without You 10/10 - This song reminds me of the beat from "Ashes To Ashes" back in 1980, but in a different style given. This song is really good as the lyrics are really touching. worth a listen to.

5. Ricochet 6/10 - This song in my opinion the worse song on the album, it just bores me silly. The song has a boring beat and it doesn't stand out for me when i first heard this song.

6. Criminal World 10/10 - This song is great! this song has a good beat all the way through and is worth the listen too.

7. Cat People (Putting Out Fire) 10/10 - This song ROCKS! the song is just fast paced and is a proper pop rock song. The song has a great chorus and its funny when Bowie says "I'm putting out fire with gasoline". Its just ta fantastic song.

8. Shake It 8/10 - This song is good but no the best for me. The song reminds me of the title track (Let's Dance), as it seems to have a similar beat. A good end to a dance album.

In conclusion, this album is just fantastic, 5/5 or 10/10, its just a good dance album for ya by David Bowie. The best songs for me are "Modern Love", "Let's Dance", "China Girl", "Criminal World" & "Cat People". If you like David Bowie and maybe you want a change from his 70s rock and want to experiment with some 80s classics , then buy this.

I remember fondly my purchasing the album version of this when it first came out. I was already well into being a Bowie fan, and while I was concerned that Let's Dance was a weird departure from all I had come to know about Bowie, I still couldn't shake off the feeling this was a fun album. A fun and well-recorded album.

All these years later we could argue about whether or not this is really Bowie (listening to everything else by Bowie would suggest, at least to me, that this release was an anomaly), but that argument aside I am very surprised at my reaction to this remastered version.

First, it, like so many other 90's remasters of Bowie's work, is very well done. They simply updated the mastering to reflect the digital nature of CD instead of the analogue nature of album and cassette. They did not get involved in the coming loudness war. They kept this simple and clean. And I think it sounds fabulous.

Second, yes; it sounds very 90's. And while that may not generally be viewed as a compliment considering the nature of so much of 90's pop music, and this is, after all, a very pop-sounding album, it's Bowie. And Bowie brings something more to this 90's sound. The music is simply better. The voice outstanding. The lyrics, generally speaking, interesting and poignant.

Listening to it today, in 2018, it actually stands up far better than I had expected. It's not so much a stroll down memory lane, but a new release in some ways. It's a window into another Bowie, who said something like "I can take your pop music, and your pop producers, and make something better. You're going to love this."

I won't kid you or myself.. this isn't in the same calibre as Heathen... Scary Monsters... Lodger... but it is a very enjoyable and listenable CD. If nothing else, China Girl is alone worth purchasing this CD.
