An outstanding disc which showcases both brain and fingers. Extraordinary technical skills outclass the merely proficient (Lortie, Lisiecki), while Chiu's poetry is far more stimulating than the mechanical Pollini and the dullish Perahia (just to pick a few of the better known 'brands' -- generally overrated). Opus 10 takes flight with a naturalness and agility such that bar lines vanish and an airy transparency that must be very close to descriptions of Chopin's own playing. The rondos are valuable additions to the release, as they are exceedingly rarely performed or recorded. In addition, Chiu's own liner notes are likely the finest ever written to accompany any recording of the études and show a refined knowledge of the early nineteenth century piano literature as well as a perceptive attention to detail ("the members of the series from no5 to no9 are linked through identical initial and final notes" -- a point I've never read before).
I set this Op10 alongside of -- but differently to -- the great renditions of the past (Ashkenazy) and present (Ohlsson). It must be auditioned by serious pianists and lovers of Chopin.
