タイムスリップを小道具にした新しいラブストーリー

タイムスリップというSF映画定番の素材を小道具に使った秀逸なラブストーリー。
特に、こういう映画でメグ・ライアンにヒロイン役をやらせたらピカイチ。
本作でもメグ・ライアンの演技は終始光っていて最高だと感じました。

この映画がラブストーリーである所以はやはりタイムスリップというSF映画ならおいしい素材を『刺身のツマ』程度に扱っていることに顕著だと思います。いわば、SF要素1、恋愛要素9とラブストーリーに振り切って制作されているのがこの映画です。

ですから、
元恋人はどうやって『時空の穴』を見つけたのか？
『時空の穴』の場所が間違っている可能性もあるのになぜ躊躇なく高所から飛びおりることができるのか？
……
などSF映画だったら放っておかない場面が基本的にすべてスルーされているのでSF映画としてみたら『突っ込み所』満載です。
しかし、そこは前述したように、SF要素と恋愛要素の割合を1：9とはじめからラブストーリーに全部振り切って制作された映画だと理解してみるべきでしょう。

その視点に立って本作をみていくと、タイムスリップというものをうまく小道具として使っているのが理解できます（逆に、いえば貴族がタイムスリップしたことによって本来正しい歴史では生まれるはずだったエレベーターが生まれなくなってしまうかもしれないといったSF要素を強くすればまったく別の作品になるでしょう）。
過去から現代にタイムスリップした貴族
現代社会の荒波の中で孤独に生きるキャリアウーマン
そのふたりが偶然出逢って恋愛がはじまる。
見所は、ふたりのすれ違いだろう。
本当に彼が過去から来たということを理解しているのは『時空の穴』を発見した元恋人だけ。
だからこそ、写真から彼が本当に過去から来たことがわかるシーンは圧巻です。

秀逸なラブストーリーですのでみたことがない方はぜひご覧ください。メグ・ライアンが素晴らしいので☆5つとさせていただきました。

メグライアンというより、ヒュージャックマンのナイト(騎士)な姿が見てみたく、手に入れました。
20年も前の作品だから、ヒューさん若い。
("レミゼラブル"、"グレイテストショーマン"を観てからなのでの感想です😁)
メグさんもトムハンクスさんたちと共演していた頃からですが、ラブコメディ貫禄充分ですね。

あまり深く考えずに楽しめる作品でした。

お気に入りなのは、19世紀のアメリカ NYに移住した貴族な世界観が美しかった。現代に残る建物など、も楽しめました。

21世紀のNYで馬を乗りこなし、マーガリンに妥協を許さず😅騎士道精神なレオポルド、ズレっぷりをもっと観てみたかった。

(ケイトの元カレ、大変な目にあいますが、良い味でてるような。)

ユー・ガット・メールを所有しており、そちらが大変好きだったので
メグ・ライアンの他のラブストーリーをと求めて、この作品にたどり着きました。

SF的な理論や合理性は置いておいて、恋愛ストーリーだけを楽しむ映画だと思います。
誰もが経験したことのある恋のはじまりのトキメキ感がいっぱいの作品だと思います。
悪質な登場人物がいない事も気持ちよく見れる一因だと思っています。
ストレートな恋愛映画を求めていらっしゃる方にはオススメだと思います。

割と前の映画だけどストーリー楽しそうだし、メグ・ライアンもヒュー・ジャックマンも好きだし、だからDVD買った。
メグ・ライアンの元彼がストーリーで大事な部分占めてるとは思わなかったです、陳腐な出会いの想像をしてたのですが全然違い、だからこそ、より楽しめました。
あんまり言うとネタバレなっていきそうなので、とりあえず元彼が飼ってる大型犬が無駄吠えしてガチャガチャしてんだけど、ヒュー・ジャックマン扮する紳士の愛情でどんどん可愛くなってくのも見どころです！
無駄吠えの演技できるって何気にすごいよなとか思ってしまいました。
ラストもうちょっと丁寧に描写して欲しかったと個人的に思いました。

くらい大好きな映画です。そろそろラブコメはきついかな？メグ・ライアン、いやでもまだまだ大丈夫、ちょっと大人な女性のメグ・ライアン。毎日毎日延々と観て、何回みてんねんと家族に飽きられています。
今だとこの映画の結末は矛盾が残るとかやいやい言われそうです。

This is a very engaging little comedy where romance meets time travel. Let me just say that I'm not normally a huge fan of time travel stories. And yet, this onel works for me just fine. Stuart (Liev Schreiber) finds a time portal and travels back in time to the year 1876 where he meets his ancestor Leopold, the Duke of Albany (Hugh Jackman). On his way back to modernity, Stuart is chased by Leopold, and while he, just, makes his escape, his persuer quite literally hangs on to him and is dragged into the 21st century. And here the fun begins. The image of Hugh Jackman in period costume wandering through contemporary NYC alone is worth the price of the DVD.

All manner of fish-out-of-water scenarios follow as the 19th century aristocrat struggles with modern life and mores. And once he meets Stuart's tomboy-ish neighbour Kate (Meg Ryan in a role that seems to be written with Sandra Bullock in mind), things become even more complicated. Leopold is impossibly polite, Kate is brash and independent. Yet, it isn't long before an unlikely romance develops between them. Add to that Stuart's urgency to get his ancestor back into the 19th century - because otherwise all he achieved in his later life (including the invention of the elevator and, much more importantly, at least to Stuart, the lives of his future progeny) will cease to exist. How will all this play out and will everybody get what they want?

Great film for a quiet night in. Get yourself a nice cup of tea (or glass of wine), curl up on the sofa with the dog, and enjoy. Lovely bit of fluffy escapism with a drop dead gorgeous Hugh Jackman as a dreamy gent. Go on, buy it. You know you want to. For those who stumble across this film because it's an early collaboration of Jackman and director James Mangold, who went on to direct Wolverine and the hugely successful Logan: This is a lovely film, but very different from the Marvel films.

Kate & Leopold is a Romantic Fantasy Comedy starring Meg Ryan who was our former American Sweetheart before she quit acting a few years ago. Here she plays Kate McKay a woman who is working as a Market executive in New York City. She just broke up with her boyfriend Stuart(played by Liev Schreiber) who happens to be a time-traveler. But when Kate's ex boyfriend accidently brings a charming handsome duke to our world(the 21st century in 2001,instead of 1876) called Leopold(played by Aussie actor Hugh Jackman sporting a Colin Firth accent btw),Kate slowly falls for him. Meanwhile we get to see Kate's brother Charlie(played by Breckin Meyer from Rat Race) who takes a shine to Leopold who he thinks is an actor like him. Despite the fact Kate & Leopold are from different time frames,can they ever get together. Now I will tell you my standout moments as I haven't seen it in 8 years I think or it could be more than that so I am gonna tell you what they are.

1. The rooftop scene where Leopold is wooing Kate was cute. In fact I liked how Meg Ryan's charcther admitted that she isn't great with men,and he says maybe you haven't found the right one. To me I agree with Ryan's charcther over guys because guys aren't like Leopold who is every woman's fantasy in my opinion. His charming,caring,romantic,makes meals,actually he does all of this for Kate.

2. The scene where Kate loses her purse with the thief while Leopold is on a horse and says give me your hand woman was rather hilarious too.

Yes the film is predicable and you know what is gonna happen,but overall I actually liked this movie. I will one of the days watch this movie again and relieve it again and again. To me though it was Hugh Jackman's persona that stole this film for me,as like I said he suited Leopold's persona. If you are a romantic comedy fan like me and you like a bit of silliness in you life for an hour and 3 quarters than check it out.

Also I liked the part where Leopold tries to propose to Kate.

My rating out of 10 a 6 out of 10. And out of 5 a 3 out of 5.

Fantasy rom-com. That pitch doesn't really trip of the tongue or inspire you does it? Yes it's a romantic time travel comedy.

Two people both dissatisfied with where they are in life and something is missing, each other, how sweet. Even so the fact that these two get together doesn't so much feel like fate as convenience. Who doesn't feel like something or someone is lacking in their life?

I do feel I've seen Meg Ryan play this part a dozen times before, she plays it well enough but perhaps someone less well known for this particular role could have made it feel fresher?
The supporting cast, Liev Schrieber, Brekin Mayer and Bradley Whitford do very well and without their talents this film could well have been a stinker.
Hugh Jackman, is the best reason to watch, once again showing the charisma and ability that is making him a star.
Ladies may want to watch this alone, if you're watching with your partner they may have to tolerate your emotions ranging from thinking Leopold is something of a hunk to digging your elbow towards your boyfriend because he isn't as charming/chivalrous/romantic as Leopold.

The directors cut allows more exposition which makes it over all a better film. To really enjoy it you must switch off the part of your brain that knows that La Boheme came out approximately 20 years after Leopold was supposed to have 'leapt' in to the future. Simple gaffes that could have been avoided.
So sit back, switch off the critical thinking and enjoy some simple but pleasing romance.

Had this on video for years. Great to finally have my own, DVD copy of it.
It's essentially a "Rom-Com", but with such a charming and engaging storyline behind it.
Don't get too bogged down in the reality of the physics of it and you'll enjoy how the story unfolds and the relationship between the characters. Hugh Jackman is great in the role (Especially in the scenes of confusion and disorientation), and Meg Ryan is more easy to tolerate than in other, similar roles that she has played.
