そしてWallmartで買った人には『Works For Me!』

Very Impressive Debut

I LOVE this cd. I think that people have had different reactions to it based on their expectations due to his performances on American Idol. One of his most infamous performances on AI was IMAGINE. He could have easily done a cd of such ballads but it would not have been realistic and true to David Archuleta as a person. David is very innocent and shy as a person yet his vocal performances contain an intensity and maturity well beyond his years. But he is only 17. I don't appreciate ballads sung by performers who have never experienced the emotions involved with the lyrics.
The eclectic mix of songs here was masterfully put together to appeal to fans of all ages. Throughout, the entire cd is carried by David's amazing strong and broad vocals showing range musically and emotively beyond what we have seen before. The first single CRUSH is perfect and shows his great talent while being a modern pop song totally suitable for his age. TOUCH MY HAND is a definite crowd pleaser and will have you dancing and moving. Other uptempo standouts are RUNNING, A LITTLE TOO NOT OVER YOU, MY HANDS and DON'T LET GO.
YOUR EYES DON'T LIE is amazing. His vocals soar like velvet strokes over the lilting lyrics with the uptempo beat lightly in the background. But there are ballads here and all are exquisite. They are also believable for someone his age and sung with pure emotion. They are performed with very little instrumentation and just David's strong vocals in the forefront. YOU CAN and TO BE WITH YOU totally display how gifted he is but the closing track, his other AI standout ANGELS, wraps things up showing all that he is capable of. His range here is amazing.
This guy can sing and is so vocally gifted. His passion and heart comes out throughout this cd. What I love most is that it provides an excellent cohesive body of work displaying his vocal abilities while not definining him in any specific genre. The modern pop is excellent as well as the ballads. As I said before, he is only 17 and I can't wait to see what his next project will be as he matures both musically and a s a person. FYI, I am a 46 year old guy and am so excited about following the career of this uniquely talented guy. Vocal ability like his comes around very rarely. He will be giving us many vocal gifts to come.
Excellent debut.

The True American Idol

As far as I'm concerned, the American Idol for 2008 is David Archuleta, so I anticipated this album and wanted it to be good. And it is. I had to listen to it several times in order to form an objective assessment, and now I am ready. To begin with, the material is just what you would expect from a first album by a 17-year-old AI contestant. Most of the songs are not there to showcase his real vocal talents, but rather to please his fan base and fit comfortably into the Top Forty. That doesn't mean that he doesn't sing them well. On the contrary, his voice and his natural inclination to be a singer make it sound like he's been doing this for years, when the truth is that probably just over one year elapsed between his AI audition and the release of this CD. I'd say that's pretty good. "Crush" was an excellent choice as a single to introduce him to the pop world. I especially like the refrain "...this crush ain't going away-ee-ay-ee-ay-ee-aaaay." Very appealing.
However, David and his people had a little surprise in store for us. The last 3 tracks differ strongly from the first 9. In "Don't Let Go" he sounds much more like a mature vocalist than a young teen idol. The melody is more challenging, and his voice sounds, well, more confident and more sophisticated. All of a sudden, he's a young man, not a boy. This sudden maturity continues in "Your Eyes Don't Lie", which is almost bluesy. Again, the vocal performance is given greater emphasis than on other tracks. The concluding track, "Angels", is a strong ballad in the tradition of what made him succeed on AI in the first place. His vocal is not lost in the rich production; he rides the tide like a veteran performer, which his fans know that he will become, given time. I expect we'll hear more of this maturity on his next album. I definitely hope so.

This album is AMAZING!

This album is amazing! I loved every song on the first try. I've had this CD since the debut and heard it constantly, but I'm still not sick of it! Usually it takes me a while to like a whole album and if I did, I'd get sick of it within a few weeks. I'm still not sick of the song "Crush" and it's been out for months! All his songs are pretty catchy. Not only are these songs great, but I think it's AMAZING because of his vocals. His pure voice is rare and beautiful.
Yes, this album is focused more on the teens/younger crowd, but I think there's at least one song that anyone can enjoy. This album has a variety of pop songs (not only focused on one type of pop). It's a bit of a tester album where you can see (maybe) what direction he may go in the future.
If you watched him on American Idol and was disappointed by him only singing ballads, this album is NOT only full of ballads, although there are some. And personally I think his ballads are beautiful! It really features how amazing his vocals are.
My favorites are Crush, You Can, A Little Too Not Over You & Waiting For Yesterday (although that song is sadly not on the main album). The bonus tracks are great so if you like the album, you should listen to the bonus tracks also!
Overall, I highly recommend this album. Give it a try if you haven't yet. This is a great debut!

Side note from album: He is also AMAZING at singing live.
Check out the AOL Sessions if you have time. :)

Where do I begin?

I really should have know that I wasn't going to like this much, but I mean, based off the strength of the first single `Crush', which I actually really like (I know, I'm so ashamed) I really had reason to believe that this could go the way of recent Jesse McCartney and be something worth my time. Sadly, outside of `Crush', there are a handful of decent tracks, a slew of mediocrity and even a few outright horrible songs here.
I still cannot believe I am reviewing this (in my defense, I totally got this on wicked sale).
Ok, so `Crush' is just a lot of fun, and David's vocals are truly stellar (the boy can sing, regardless of his poor taste in material). I didn't watch this particular season of American Idol, but you couldn't help but hear this song blow up the radio stations (much more friendly than anything I've heard from the winning David).
For me, `A Little Too Not Over You', `You Can', `Desperate' and `You Eyes Don't Lie' fall in that next tier. They are not bad but they are not great. They sound less generic than the rest of the album, and David's voice is good on all fronts and each has likeability to them. `You Can' is a sweet and soft song, and the acoustic musical arrangement works very well and actually sets the song apart a bit. It may be the best track on the album outside of `Crush' (it's a better song than `Crush' to be honest; it's just not as fun or catchy).
And what in the world is it with tweens singing about falling in love?
Eh, that's for another discussion.
The next group is `Touch My Hand', `Barriers', `My Hands' and `Don't Let Go'. All are mediocre and very familiar generic pop songs. They have a respectable (or not very respectable depending on how you look at it) catchiness to them, but the fact remains that they are bottom of the barrel pop tracks that any other one-hit-wonder could have thrown in their album. There is absolutely nothing special about these tracks.
But even they are not as bad as what comes next.
`Running', `To Be With You', `Don't Let Go' and `Angels' are just plain awful contributions to this album (his take on `Angels' is just stomach-turning horrible). His voice sounds off on these (for the most part), the tracks are boring and unflattering to him as an artist (they feel out of his range and too mature in parts). They just throw the whole thing off. It's like a little boy trying to be Josh Groban, and that just doesn't work; AT ALL.
One reviewer said to listen to his skill and then the songs. I'm not refuting his skill at all, but someone's skill is not the reason to boast their album filled with bad songs. That's like saying "Russell Crowe is an amazing actor with great `skill' so we should give `The Quick and the Dead' five stars even though the movie is bad". This album gets a D from me. Skill wise I'd give young Archuleta a Bish grade. He has a voice (he still needs to hone it a bit) and there is no denying that, but his skill is wasted on this forgettable collection of mediocrity.
