The least you can say about Taylor Hicks is that he's not like prior American Idol champs: he already had almost a decade of gigging in bars when he won the fifth season in 2006, complete with songwriting experience, an ability to play harmonica and guitar, and a pair of self-released albums. On his major-label debut, the Silver Fox settles in a plush, comfortable sound framed by vintage-sounding soul and R&B, as well as classic rock--it's comfort food for the ears. The one thing that's not here is Hicks's first single, "Do I Make You Proud." Other than that, the songs are a well-balanced mix of oldies (Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay My Hat"), newbies that sound like oldies (Rob Thomas's "Dream Myself Awake," Bryan Adams's "The Right Place"), the obligatory Diane Warren ballad ("Places I've Been"), and some party-fun anthems ("The Runaround," "Heaven Knows"). This last track actually is one of two paying tribute to Hicks's patron saint, Ray Charles--it references the piano riff from "What'd I Say," while "The Right Place" was originally written for Charles. Clearly, there are worse people to look up to. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The Runaround-This is a get up and dance song. It is peppy and fun. The lyrics are a tad cheesy, but that dosen't matter, this song isn't about the lyrics, its about having a good time. Rating: 4 out of 5
Dream Myself Awake - This song was written by Rob Thomas, and it sounds like it. The biggest problem I have with Rob Thomas songs is that they always sound disjointed. The chorus does not seem to flow with the rest of the song. It is apparent with this song as well, however Taylors vocals could make row, row, row your boat sound good. Somehow, this song still works. Rating 3.5 out of 5
Heaven Knows - This would have been my choice for his 1st single. It is upbeat. It takes some riffs from What I'd Say, but Taylor makes it modern and great. Rating 5 out of 5
Gonna Move - A nice rendition of an old classic. Its not up to the Susan Tedeschi clasic cover of this Paul Pena song, but still worthwhile. RAting 4 out of 5
Wherever I Lay My Hat - Taylors cover of this Marvin Gaye song can be described with one word - goosebumps. Rating 5 out of 5
Give Me Tonight - An interesting song that is a throwback to the disco days Rating 3.5 out of 5
Just To Feel That Way - This is Taylors 1st single. It was my choice for his second. It is a Billy Joelesque power ballad. It may be the song that showcases Taylors vocals the best. Rating 5 out of 5
The Maze - This song is kind of poppish. There is not much to say. It's not bad, but dosen't really stand out in any way.
Places I've Been - This song was written by Diane Warren. Which initially scared me that Taylor would do a song by the mistrss of sap. However, it works. I'm not sure if its the song, or Taylors beautiful vocals that make it work. Rating 4.5 out of 5
Soul Thing - The 1st of Taylors originals that are on the CD. It was never one of my favorite Taylor originals, I would have preferred Heart and Soul, but the re-mix works. I can see it doing well as a single. Rating 4.5 out of 5
The Deal - Another Taylor original. I liked it originally and I like it hear. Rating 4 out of 5
The Right Place - This song was written by Bryan Adams for Ray Charles, but Ray died before he could record it. It is pure and simple, the gem of the CD. This is Taylor. It is beautiful and soothing. It is worth the price of the CD for this song alone. Rating 10 out of 5
Hell of A Day - Some CD's have this as a bonus track. I would highly recommend searching for the one with this bonus track. It is Taylor original, that is much better re-mixed. Rating 4.5 out of 5.
The emergence, announced by the most startling Ray Charles emulation from a boy with blue eyes, was far from the stuff of 2nd class Vegas caberet, and well worth a recording by itself. Harry Connick and Buble' made careers out of aping Sinatra, there was easily room for a left-field take on the ivory tickling enigma exiled from his native Georgia.
But the demograph of THE SHOW that brought Hicks to worldwide attention demands a different direction sufficient to carry 7 digit downloads, so we get a Route-66 car-wreck between Rascal Flatts and Bruce Hornsby.
It works but demands several listens to earn respect that it threatens to lose all too easily.
The collection is well-penned and as SONGs go most are pop-delights. But it all lacks sincerity or a faithful direction, striding too easily between AOR and bubble gum. The Runaround as an opener is a pastiche.
Hicks voice doesn't cut mustard and is at times way beyond the neck twisting performances he served up with TV dinners just a few years before.
The croak has mostly gone and taken the edge with it. Mr. Hicks sounds a little under-rehearsed and is frequently found wandering looking for an interesting path through the material before him.
The band is well selected, but never sounds like HIS band, more the seasoned house players for tonights "...special guest at the Golden Lion...."
Hicks can deliver and this is far from poor. As a first offering it is worthy of your hard-earned and will get played regularly, but we were promised Leona and got SuBo. There is a story, there is a nice listening experience, but here was a promise to shatter the formulaic mould of the reality, gameshow, talentless competition with someone who dared to untick the boxes.
I want to love the eponymously titled TH and one day....I probably will, but the irritations of some of the earlier numbers are not quite ironed by the luscious treatment given to some such as Paul Youngs take on Marvin Gaye's WHEREVER I LAY MY HAT.
Available so cheap now that you simply cannot justify avoiding it. Road-trippin' that should have been jazz flippin'
A far more frequent flaw is the utter blandness of much of the material. That's not to say the singing isn't excellent - Taylor is in great voice and delivers what his fans hoped for. But some of the songs, like Rob Thomas's "Dream Myself Awake," are just characterless pop tunes. Anyone expecting something approaching a soul album is bound to be somewhat disappointed.
All that said: the Hicks originals are the standout tracks. Two songs, "Soul Thing" and "The Deal," have been carried over from his independent EP "Under the Radar." The production has been bulked up, but not to the point where it overwhelms these very strong songs. It is on these originals that we hear what Taylor has in mind when he talks about being a soul artist. A third Taylor original, "Hell of a Day," is available only on the version carried by a certain major retailer - it is beyond my comprehension why this was left off the standard release. It is possibly the best of them all - in fact, I think it would've made a great single. I urge Taylor fans to pick up the version with that superb bonus track.
The album is bookended with great tracks. The first single, "The Runaround," is a very good up-tempo song that allows Taylor to really work up a head of steam. The album closes with a Bryan Adams song originally written for Ray Charles (who died before he could record it). Taylor really digs into this ballad - the sparest arrangement on the album. It's so good that it, along with the original tunes and "The Runaround," really make the lesser tunes seem that much more uninspired (the songs/production/musicianship - NOT the vocals, which Taylor really sells even on the poorest material).
I think three stars is fair for this album. In no way does it reflect my opinion of Taylor's talents. It was made quickly - and I can only surmise it's content was heavily controlled by the AI machine. How else can you explain the nearly total lack of Taylor's signature harmonica (he plays it only on two songs)? Depsite being pictured with a guitar several times in the booklet, he apparently wasn't allowed to play on the recordings. If Taylor can keep writing strong material for himself, and if the quality control improves on anything not written by him, there will no doubt be much better and more consistent albums to come.
