SUPREME HARD BOP
2010年9月14日 - (Amazon.com)
Just the best. In my top 20 all time, all genre. I got the record in 1982. I can't even begin to guess how many times I have listened to it. When it finally, finally, finally, came out on CD (and, I waited and searched and waited and searched and waited and searched for a CD copy of it) I couldn't get to the "Buy it Now" button fast enough. Because it was a Japanese import CD, I'm thinking that the shipping may have been more than the CD cost. That didn't matter. I don't think I would have hesitated even one tiny bit even if the CD and shipping costs had been 5 times what they actually were (I'm thinking it was something like 37 bucks for the CD and its shipping costs--it just doesn't matter-- the recording and CD quality are amazing for a live performance from that time period). The whole band is just amazing-- as good as he is on it, I like this one more for the band as a whole rather than just Sonny. In fact, I think Tommy Flanagan steals the show-- his piano just has this incredible flow and feel to it. I have a ton of Sonny recordings, but nothing else is seems quite like this. It is one of those recordings that just transports you. Completely acoustic, completely live, completely great-- this one has it all.

this is a very powerful live performance (with a great band including two drummers) by the incomparable tenor sax giant sonny rollins. it's marred slightly by sonny's frequent strolling away from the microphone while continuing to play. this makes the drums (and the two fantastic drummers) very out front on the recording. sonny (of course) is one of the very best players in all of jazz and you always want to hear him out front but in this case the overall affect works very well indeed. it's intense and relaxing at the same time. i love it. personal: sonny (ts), tommy flanagan(p), bob cranshaw(b), billy higgins(ds), micky roker(ds). five songs, approx. 40 mins. long

This is an extremely fine example of the best that jazz can offer. The recording is live, and the virtuosity displayed by this group of jazz stalwarts (Sonny Rollins sax, Tommy Flanagan piano, Bob Cranshaw bass, Billy Higgins drums, and Micky Roker drums) is overwhelming. Mr. Rollins is one of the all-time greats of the saxophone, and his playing here is the best ever. The riffs are crisp and imaginative, and I simply don't have better Sonny Rollins in my collection. I have other versions of my favorite on this album, "On Green Dolphin Street," by Rollins and others, but this is the one in my listening and shedding rotation for over 30 years. This title is very difficult to get ahold of, but well worth it.
