This slim but well-produced monograph features Tenmyouya's 'Neo-Samurai' or 'Samurai Nouveau' acrylic paintings. He uses the spirit of earlier traditions in Japanese art as a starting point, adding in modern-day pop culture obsessions: mecha, kaiju, and shonen/seinen manga. His large-scale compositions, stunning and almost gaudy use of gold-leaf, and clear, stylish representations bridge gallery showmanship with illustration. Like many contemporary Japanese artists, most notably Takashi Murakami and Aida Makoto, Tenmyouya is a tireless self-promoter. In a culture where high art and low art have merged more effectively than anywhere else on Earth, he realizes that visibility and 'branding' (for lack of a better word) are more important to an artists' success than critical acceptance.
As appealing as his paintings are, this collection is almost a decade old, and trying to find monographs featuring his newest (and best) work is difficult -- so difficult, I don't know if they exist. For now, this is a slick introduction to an exciting artist.
