1* for the vinyl quality NOT the music
I hate having to give 1* to one of my top 5 albums but...
Like many other reviewers I had problems with the record jumping badly on the track Star, side 2 track 2. This was on not just 1 but 2 copies, received within 24 hours of each other - my original and its replacement.
This problem seems to have been going on for years judging by the reviews so I've gone for a refund this time.
Surely it can't be worth Amazon still selling this.

For vinyl lovers.

This is a review of the vinyl album (2012 remaster) no extra's.
Firstly i'll deal with the packaging. The cover is of a very good quality with a fine textured finish, it comes with a copy of the original inner sleeve with lyrics and images, plus an antistatic plain white sleeve, a nice touch.
RCA logos have been replaced with that of Parlophone.
The vinyl is 180g with orange labels made to look like the originals but no RCA logos, instead it just says Bowie.
I always clean any vinyl i receive (old or new) before i attempt to think about playing it, no exception here. Put it through my cleaning machine and then sat to enjoy.
I can honestly say that the vinyl plays cleanly all the way through and is quite between tracks, very happy with it. Sounds great, i would prefer an original, but prices are getting ridiculous, so this remaster seemed ideal at the price.

Bowie's Best Album Of The 1970s
This was the album that made a huge star out of David Bowie in 1972 and introduced his Ziggy Stardust persona in the process. Every track is a classic and there are no duff tracks on the album at all. I have the old release from 1990-ish but, although this 40th Anniversary edition is supposed to be digitally remastered, I couldn't detect any noticeable differences in the overall sound quality. Unlike the release from 1990, there are also no bonus tracks on this release, which is a shame. However, the album itself is still an all-time classic album and should be checked out by any Bowie fan or any fan of classic rock albums. This is still his finest album of the 1970s, in my opinion and only 1980's Scary Monsters album matched it. I give it the full five stars. Bowie didn't get much better than this.

Classic Album, Almost Perfect Re-Master.
So, yet another re-issue of one of the most iconic British rock albums ever. Is it worth investing in again? Well, yes it is. After the total debacle that was the 30th Anniversary edition (marred by poor re-mastering and bad editing, although the bonus tracks were a slight saving grace) we have the 40th Anniversary. Newly re-mastered, it's a big improvement in sound, although still not perfect.(And has no bonus tracks - Boo!) It might sound like nit-picking but why have they persisted with the USA album mix of 'Starman'? To answer the question posed by another reviewer the original mix as it appeared on the UK vinyl and single had a much louder and drier piano build-up before the choruses, devoid of the phasing applied to the mix of the track on the American pressings of the album. All subsequent CD releases have used the US mix, depriving those of us who treasure our original UK vinyl a chance to own the track in digital format. Unfortunately, this re-issue is no different so the wait goes on. That aside, if you don't own this album already (and let's face it, if you're a fan of proper music you really should) then this is the one to go for. I won't go into detail about each track - suffice to say there's many high points here - but it contains some of Bowies' finest moments. Opening track 'Five Years' 'Moonage Daydream' 'Starman' 'Suffragette City' not to mention the closing song 'Rock N Roll Suicide'. A magnificent example of how to build a track from simple to grandiose in just three minutes. It's not Bowies' greatest album but it IS his most important and for that reason alone you cannot call yourself a David Bowie fan and NOT own it. 50th Anniversary anyone?

A True Classic.
In years to come, the stance on what albums are really 'classic', and 'definitive listening' will probably shift and change. But one thing's for sure, David Bowie's 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' will *always* be a mainstay of such lists and selections. It's wall-to-wall art rock perfection; with proto-punk and a good deal of glam thrown in for good measure. From the album's truly haunting dystopian opener (that would go on to be a theme referenced in much of Bowie's later work), 'Five Years' - that builds and builds and builds - to groovy 'Soul Love' and cosmic 'Moonage Daydream', this album really is flawless. Side One of this record also gives us the timeless 'Starman', an enduring ballad of our saviour we all love to know, as well as the neat rock anthem in 'It Ain't Easy'.
And if that wasn't enough, Side Two opens with 'Lady Stardust' and 'Star', doses of escapism and poignant realism in equal measure. The riff of 'Ziggy...' and punkish 'Hang On To Yourself' mark great moments in music, as well as one of Bowie's best ever, 'Suffragette City'. 'Rock 'n' Roll Suicide', the album's closer, crescendoes into something ethereal, and exquisite. If you like any kind of rock, then this album is a must-have for you. It marks a milestone in music. Glam acts have followed since, rock acts have followed since, and great artists. But none truly like Bowie.
This record also sounds superb on the high-quality 180g pressing. I had no trouble with skips or anything - sadly something I hear more and more in even new releases - and each moment was punctuated with glorious sound and production. The vocals are crisp and superb. There's no real price you can put on an album like this, and yet it is sold at such an incredible price.
The vinyl itself comes in a blank, white protective sleeve, as well as an alternative one with printed band pictures and lyrics attached. Sleeve itself is a single; no gatefold.
