In bright light, the PlaySport's video looks great - sharp, with very vivid colors and good white balance. It's impressive on an iPad, and even looks nice on my 720p HD TV. In low light - like a somewhat dimly lit interior room at night - the video quality is downright awful. Extremely smeary, soft images, with lots of trailing artifacts and horrible colors, and a yellow/greenish hue (the white balance gets thrown way off.) It's ugly on an iPad, and unwatchable on an HD TV. The more light you add, the better the image gets - it's as simple as that. I would almost go so far as to say that you should really only be using this outside, or only in very brightly lit rooms.
The sound quality is fine.
The build quality is actually pretty nice. It feels solid, and the doors covering the SD card and the cable connections are very well constructed (I haven't tested the waterproofness, though.) My only complaint is that the main navigation button feels squishy, imprecise and cheap. This could be improved greatly.
I haven't tested the included software, because I just remove the SD card and use the Apple Camera Connection Kit (sold separately) to load the videos onto my iPad.
NOTE: the HDMI cable is NOT included and is NOT technically free. You have to register your Playsport, then Kodak will send you an email that allows you to order an HDMI cable via the mail for around $7.00 shipping and handling.
Overall, if you're looking for a cheapo handheld pocket camcorder, this seems like a pretty solid choice.
The PlaySport is SUPER easy to use. My four-year-old twins can operate it with ease. I did not look at the dimensions of the camera in the product description, so I was pleasantly surprised at how small it actually was. It is about the same size, if not a bit smaller than, as an Iphone.
The PlaySport has more zoom than I would have imagined such a small camera might have. I used it to capture video and digital photos of a Blue Angels practice show in Pensacola, Florida. I was able to get some really nice photos and video of the show. The LCD screen is very difficult to see in the daylight, even on a bright, yet overcast day as we had at this show. But the pictures turned out great, as did the video. I'm impressed by the high definition video! There are options for sepia, black and white, high saturation, and even a 70s mode!
I uploaded photos to my computer with the included USB cable, a cable that also includes a removable AC plug. (I love the all-in-one design of the USB cable and AC charger!) Photos uploaded very quickly. I used a 16gb SD card that help over 300 photos and videos with plenty of room to spare. Not sure I'd ever fill it up from a single vacation! I also really like the video playback and editing options. You can cut your video directly on the PlaySport! Very cool touch there! It gives you the option to Save or Save as a New File.
The only major thing I would change about the PlaySport is the lack of a flash. I attempted to take a photo in a dark restaurant and it just did not come through at all. Would love to have that option - but seriously, most of the photos and videos that will be taken with this will be in the outdoors. And the price was pretty nice, too!
For my family, the Kodak PlaySport is the best option for throwing into the beach bag and not having to worry about it getting wet or sand getting on it. In fact, I actually did just throw it into our beach bag when I had taken more than enough pictures! The camera can take an impact of about 5ft and can go underwater to depths of 10m, which I did not try out. It was splashed on and in some high humidity conditions, but I never submerged it because I just never needed to. I did purchase a float strap - just in case I accidently dropped it into the ocean!
The camera is very durable. I have taken this camera to the desert and it survived dust storms. I have taken this camera backpacking and it survived hard falls on rock and swimming through lakes.
The camera is very easy to use to take both still pictures or video. One of my favorite features of this camera is that it takes SD cards which means that if you purchase large card or two, you can take an endless amount of video. This is what sold me over most other camcorders that only had internet memory limited to 8 or 16gb. HD quality video would fill one of these other cameras up in no time while my stash of very cheap 32 gb SD cards allow me to take video forever.
This camera is easy to attach to your computer using a standard micro USB to normal USB cord and the files are easy to drag and drop from your camcorder to your computer.
The biggest drawback of this camcorder is that the quality is garbage in low light or night time shooting. I do not even bother attempting to use this at night. This is a problem with pretty much all comparable pocket cameras though and not unique to this particular camera. Still if you planned on using a camcorder to shoot at night or in dark indoor places then don't spend your money on this camcorder (or any other pocket camcorder at that).
This camera is a great value and I recommend the purchase if you are looking for a durable pocket camcorder.
