Azumanga Daioh (translated as "Great King Azumanga", derived from the mangaka's surname) is a bubbly slice-of-life centering around several high school girls and their wacky English and P.E. teachers. There's Tomo, the ever energetic and competitive tomboy who loves to tease her friends; Yomi, the perfect student who takes the majority of Tomo's teasing but certainly isn't afraid to snap back; Sakaki, the mysterious and gentle quiet girl who everyone thinks is "tough", but is actually a soft hearted animal lover; Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga, named for the area of Japan which she came from and a total hopeless klutz and goofball; and Chiyo Mihama, more commonly called Chiyo-chan, a child genius who entered freshman year of high school at only ten years old and despite her refined ways and high IQ is still a bit of a goofball who instantly clicks with Osaka. Then there's immature English teacher Yukari Tanizaki, who is more like a student than a teacher, and P.E. teacher Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa, a woman who tries her hardest to carry herself seriously, but often falls prey to Yukari's wacky ways.
Occasionally featured as well are the girls' friends Chihiro, a generally happy girl but an average student, and Kaorin, a girl who has a huge crush on Sakaki that borders on infatuation, being reduced to a sweaty, shaking mess when she sees Sakaki in a bathing suit. Kagura, a strong girl in Class 5 who rivals Sakaki but is competitive and a hopeless knucklehead like Tomo, later becomes a part of the group.
This first volume contains five episodes. Unlike the normal anime setup (Opening, Part A, Part B, Closing) each episode is set up just like the manga chapters; as the manga chapters were each composed of several small, paneled comics, each anime episode is composed of smaller sub episodes. This disc contains:
- Child High School Student/She's a Prodigy/Scary Maybe?/Wildcat Tomo-chan!/The Osakan Gal
- Osaka Today As Well/ P.E. - Volleyball/Hiccups/The Brain.../Brand New
- Nyamo/Factional Rivalry/Yukari's Here/Not My Fault/Forever And Ever
"Pool, Pool, Pool"
- A Fun Profession/Pool, Pool, Pool/Ribbon/Just The Two Of Them/A Good Person?
- Summer Break/Welcome To Chiyo's Room/Invitation/Someone With Experience, Speak/Done For
The booklet that comes with the DVD is much more than just an episode list! It features a bio for Chiyo, official art for Chiyo and Chihiro, staff comments on each episode, and (just like the manga) translator's notes for those who may not be familiar with some of the jokes and Japanese culture.
If you want a nice, easy going anime with some light hearted laughs and smiles, this is definitely it! Azumanga Daioh is a classic slice-of-life, probably the first one most anime lovers watched, and it will always have a place in my heart and on my shelf.
You get to know the characters very well in a short time and as a result you are already smiling when Osaka kicks her shoe off to forecast the weather because you know that something is going to happen. Life is just never going to be that simple for Osaka.
These characters are so well drawn that I find it easy to believe countless school girls in Japan are living out some variation of Azumanga Daioh. The girls of the series are not perfect nor cool. They are not particularly special, and yet they are. For me, one of the appealing qualities of this series is how it takes the ordinary and ends up with something wonderful and wildly funny.
Something you may wish to know: I try to avoid learning anymore than is necessary to make a decision about watching an anime which has caught my attention. Therefore, I was aware that Kaorin, one of the minor female characters, was attracted to Sakaki, the quiet athletic girl, although I had no idea where wishful thinking by fans ended and reality began. I refer to Kaorin as a minor character because she has relatively little screen time, although her moments, and particularly one involving a folk dance, are extremely amusing. The same -sex attraction is not a decisive factor to me one way or another. However, some people may find that sort of thing objectionable, and they have every right to their opinion. For those people I would like to point out that Azumanga Daioh is not about romance, and it is most certainly not about sex. Don't let the overheated fantasies and imaginations of fans in forums scare you away. If a same -sex crush is the only thing stopping you from watching this show just remember how swimmingly your own high school crushes went.
Another thing: there are some depictions of alcohol use by the teachers. Who would have thought that adult teachers drink? In one scene the teacher Nyamo learns that drinking can lead to way too much sharing of personal information with the students.I love it that the Japanese don't gloss over such things. Of course there is precious little they gloss over but that is another story : ) The students are never depicted using alcohol,by the way.
I don't think of this as a kid's show. Or rather, I assume I'm not the only guy over thirty who laughed at such moments as Tomo (my favorite character) discovering how little she really knows about reindeer. In another incident Tomo has a monstrous internal choice to make: does she take a tiny step into adulthood or just do what her entire nature begs of her? As insignifigant as it was, I found it quite memorable. And I sort of despise myself for laughing at Tomo deliberately and sadistically missing Chiyo over and over again with the volleyball after all of Chiyo's team have been hit and she is the only one left.
To avoid confusion, please keep in mind my review applies to the entire series, including this dvd.
