の四名からなるMr.Misterの大ヒットセカンド。
かなりの遍歴を経ているので、絶妙なサウンドです。
とにかく、かなり普通なバンドです。
それなのに、超クールなサウンドを生み出します。
劇的な展開に、メロディアスな曲調を併せ持っています。
それを作り出すのが派手さは無いが、
安定感と曲を盛りたてる、いぶし銀のギターサウンド。
（ソロはきくとこ無いけど、プレイはかなりうまい）
ドラムスにもスゴテクは無いですが、
盛り立て方とリズムの刻み方はかなりの技術を感じます。
キーボードはしゃしゃり出てないのに、効果的に曲にアクセントをつけます。
ヴォーカルはかなり普通な中高音・・・
１９８５年は一品料理のような濃い濃いサウンドが流行しました、
その中で相対的なバランスで勝負した彼ら故の成功といえます。
まあ、何が彼らの凄さかというと遍歴ゆえの作曲、編曲センスですね。
とにかく聴いてみると劇的な展開を見せる曲と、
それを安定して叶える技術がお分かりいただけると思います。
お勧めはやはりシングル二つ。
「Broken wings」と「Kyrie」
前者はもう世紀を超えた名曲とでも言いますか、
今でも古臭くない曲で、クールでシンセ控えめ、
とにかく聴いてください。
後者はうってかわって８０年代だなあという感じの、
ポップな曲、澄んだ曲調と、アカペラフレーズをお楽しみください。
「BLACK/WHITE」は編曲のうまさを実感、まあ普通に聞いても良いかな？
「UNIFORM OF YOUTH」で、ギターやっと目立ちますね・・・
と続いて「WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD」まで。
かっこいい、ダサくて聴けないといわないで、密かに聞いてください。

Ｍｒ．Ｍｉｓｔｅｒの大ヒットアルバムの最新リマスター盤である。日本でも２年前に紙ジャケット仕様でリマスター盤が発売されていると思うが、そのときのリマスターとは違う仕上がりなのだろうか？誰か聴き比べた方がいれば教えていただきたい。しかし今回のリマスターはすごい仕上がりだと思う。ペイジのボーカルの輪郭がくっきり浮かび上がり、私が持っている日本盤の旧規格ＣＤでは聴こえない音が聴こえたりと、今の若い人たちに今年リリースされたＣＤであると言ってもわからないのでは？とにかく聴いてみてください！

今回の再発は米Friday Musicによるものですが、私のレビューにある「スターシップ」の米Friday Music再発盤と共通して言えることは、歌詞部分がピンボケになっていることです。また、「キリエ」のシングルヴァージョン位はボーナストラックとして収録してほしかった！！

今から24年前、このアルバムが発売された年に学校の友人がカセットテープにダビングしてくれたのを思い出します。今聴いても、いえ、今聴くと当時以上にこのアルバムの作品としての完成度の高さに、ただただ脱帽！です。ギター、キーボード、ドラムスがお互いの良さをひきだす見事な演奏をアルバム全編にわたって聴かせ、その音楽性は上品で気品があり、聴くことで我が心が研ぎ澄まされ、純化されるのです。
さらに歌詞が素晴らしい！！英語が分かる人は和訳を見ず、オリジナルの英語の歌詞カードを見ながら聴いてみてください。恋愛、若いということ、（おそらくキリスト教への）信仰など、いくつかのテーマが、美しくそして情熱的に熱い音楽（伴奏)とともに歌われていきます。生きている間にこのアルバムを聴くこと・・・それがあなたの人生に確かな充実感と幸福感を必ずもたらしてくれるでしょう。私がこの世で一番好きで、一番大事で、必ずお墓に持って行きたい至宝のアメリカのロックの名盤です。大人な音楽世界が好きな人は、「買い」です。

１９８６年ビルボード全米アルバム最高１位。全米での累計セールス２００万枚突破。
　
　１９８６年４月頃。当時、中学２年生になったばかりで大ヒットしていた"Kyrie”で自分を洋楽マニアへと向かわせるキッカケにもなった大変罪深いアルバム。同時期にアルバムも１週間のみだけど全米１位を記録した。

それから２０年以上経過した２００９年の８月に国内限定で最新リマスター紙ジャケ盤として再発され瞬く間に完売した。当時、自分も事前に予約して購入。

　特に今回の目玉はボーナストラックとして追加収録された３曲の内の１曲、全米８位を記録した"Is It Love"のシングルヴァージョンではないだろうか。自分の知る限りＣＤ収録としては今回が初お披露目となる？激レアヴァージョン。ただ他の"Kyrie"と"Broken Wings"のシングルヴァージョンは個人的に２０年近く前にはＣＤで入手できていたのでレアとは全く思えませんが・・・。

　あと肝心の音質の面では自分が所裕している国内盤で３回目の再発となる１９９５年２０ビットＫ２リマスター盤と比較してみると残念な結果でした。
　まず音量レベルは幾分引き上げられてはいるものの、サウンド的には平面的で立体感に欠けている印象。余り奥行きがない。その点でアルバム全体を通して感じられる空間的な広がりが差ほど感じられない。
　ハッキシ言って１９９５年２０ビットＫ２リマスター盤の方がサラウンドが効いていて音は全然イイ。（恐らく国内２０ビットＫ２リマスター盤が一番サウンドがイイって事でしょう。）なので当時、余りにも失望したのでスグに手放してしまいました。

　ちなみに旧盤所有者の方は２０１０年に輸入盤でエコパック仕様でリマスターと謳われた２５ｔｈアニバーサリー再発盤には手を出さない方が無難です。音量レベルはかなり低いし音質もリマスターされているとは到底思えない程良くなかったですね。
１９９５年国内２０ビットＫ２リマスター盤と比較したら全てにおいて圧倒的に悪いです。購入するならその点を踏まえた方が良いかと。

ただ、自分に洋楽の素晴らしさを最初に気付かせてくれた程、このアルバムのクォリティの高さが非常に素晴らしい事には何ら変わりはありませんけど・・・。（笑）

＊追伸：

　その後に確認したところ"Is It Love"のシングルヴァージョンは２００１年リリースのベスト盤、"The Best Of"に収録されてました。
自分はそのベスト盤を当時から購入しておりましたが差ほど聞き込んでなくて最近気付きました。
　アルバムヴァージョンとの違いはシングルヴァージョンにはホーンセクションが導入されて音質をハイバイアス気味に振っています。サウンドも今回の紙ジャケ盤よりかはバランスの面で圧倒的にイイですね。
　それを考慮するとこの２００９年紙ジャケ限定盤の価値は随分と落ちます。アマゾンのマーケットプレイスに出品されているような値段はないと思いますよ。あしからず・・・。

　確か'85年。年間チャートトップ10に2曲(キリエ、ウェルカム・トゥ・ザ・リアル・ワールド)入ったのはこのグループのみだったと記憶しています。当時のツボを押さえた楽曲で、一気にファンをつかみましたが･･･
　
　最近になってまた聴いてみたくなり、今回購入しました。
　そういえば来日コンサートをFMで放送したのを録音したテープがどこかにあったはず･･･

"Welcome to the Real World" Remastered & Reloaded in 2015!

Originally released in 1985 on RCA Records, "Welcome to the Real World" was the big breakthrough for the American band Mr. Mister, selling over a million copies in the U.S. alone and earning a platinum certification. The band's previous album, 1984's debut, "I Wear the Face", had been poorly received, stalling at No. 170 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and producing only one minor hit in "Hunters of the Night", which peaked at No. 57 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Flash forward 30 years later, and Rock Candy Records, which is based in the U.K., has licensed from Sony Music the original 1985 U.S. No. 1 album, this time adding 6 bonus tracks. Included in this reissue is no less than 3 hit singles, including the Hot 100 No. 1 classics "Broken Wings" and "Kyrie" in addition to the No. 8 smash, "Is It Love". The track listing is as follows ...

I have included the lengths of each track in order to clear up any confusion. When I stumbled upon the track listing for this release a few months ago, I was confused by the listings of extended versions for "Broken Wings" and "Kyrie" because, to the best of my knowledge, official extended versions did not exist. Only edited versions exist for these tracks. With this release, Rock Candy has gone back to the original 12" vinyl single releases in order to compile the track selection. That's where the confusion arises, since the U.K. 12" single releases list these tracks as extended versions when, in fact, they are not in comparison to the original album/LP versions.

"Kyrie [Extended Version]" (4:15)* is actually the "Single Version" and 12 seconds shorter than the "LP Version" (4:27). The "Single Version" ends abruptly with the a cappella vocal, whereas the "LP Version" fades out. The "Single Version" can actually be found on a variety of compilations, including a number of Mr. Mister releases. Going back to the U.K. 12", "Kyrie" is listed as an "Extended Version" (4:15) on the back sleeve. The vinyl record itself does not list it as other than "Kyrie" (4:10) (note the minor 5 seconds difference in time, which is simply due to the silence at the end of the track).

However, flip the record over, and the b-side is "Kyrie [Edited Version]" (3:38), perhaps explaining the "Extended Version" listing on the back sleeve, since an even shorter edited version is included as well. This 3:38 version, absent from this reissue, removes the build-up intro and starts with the synth, but unmixed, as heard at 32 seconds in the "Single Version" (4:15). In other words, the first 32 seconds are essentially cut in this "Edited Version", starting with a dry synth intro. Radio stations often played this shortened, intro-free version back in 1985/1986. Recently, I heard it in a grocery store, so this edited cut is out there somewhere. This mix, to the best of my knowledge, is extremely rare and has never been released on CD. It would have made an essential addition to this reissue, in my opinion. I like having the versions that I heard on the radio on these types of reissues. I imagine that it was simply overlooked for this collection or a master could not be found.

"Broken Wings [Extended Version]" (5:45)* runs the same length as the "LP Version" (5:46), so how is it extended? Well, the U.K. 12", once again, lists the song as an extended version on the sleeve. Perhaps that's because the U.K. 7" single (among several others, including the U.S. 7") clocks the track at an edited 4:29. Apparently, various 7" releases did, in fact, feature an edited version of the song. Various artists compilations include the same cut but have the track running about 4:34 to 4:48, opting to fade earlier or later. The official U.S. 7" runs about 4:45, which is more than likely the 4:29 listed version. In those days, many vinyl releases had incorrect playing times listed on the sleeves. Upon listening to this "Extended Version" (5:45), I can hear subtle differences in the sound in comparison to the "LP Version". This "Extended Version" seems to be a "fuller" mix, with the bass brought up in the mix. Then again, perhaps it's just the mastering. Regardless, the sources used appear to be different because I can hear a slight audio imperfection at about 2 seconds in on the "Extended Version" that doesn't exist in the "LP Version". Perhaps a better fitting title for this "Extended Version" would have been "12 Inch Extended Mix", if it is indeed a different version.

"Is It Love [Dance Mix]" (6:29)*** makes a very rare appearance on CD. To the best of my knowledge, it has only appeared on CD previously on "Dance Classics - Pop Edition Vol. 3", released by Rodeo Media in 2010. "Is It Love [Dub Mix]" (4:17)^, on the other hand, has never appeared on CD, to the best of my knowledge. Both tracks were remixed by Victor Flores.

"Broken Wings [Live]" (6:18)** and "Uniform of Youth [Live]" (4:48)** are not credited as to where they were recorded live anywhere in the liner notes or booklet, to the best of my knowledge. Note that in 1986 RCA did issue a 12" promo in the U.S. for "Black/White" b/w "Life Goes On [Live at the Ritz, NYC, December 14, 1985]". Perhaps these live versions are from the same show. Based on the audio quality, they seem to be from around that time.

So, what is missing? Well, first of all, congratulations to Rock Candy for nearly packing this CD full, featuring 6 bonus tracks and 75 minutes of music. However, as a collector, I would have skipped over the live tracks, even though they are good, and included the 4:45 7" edit of "Broken Wings" and "Edited Version" of "Kyrie" (3:38). Single edits/versions are part of an album's history, and they should always be included, in my opinion. Live versions can be nice, but they are not essential when only two of them are included and not part of the original single releases.

Mastering credits go to Jon Astley for Close To The Edge Mastering, 24-bit remastered in 2015. The sound is full, crisp, and clean. Yes, it is loud, but it is far from the worse offender of brick-walling. It is not too harsh or too bright, which is often the result of a brick-walled remaster. Astley has done a fine job with mastering this reissue, in my opinion.

The packaging is beautiful and excellent with a full-color booklet and enhanced artwork. The booklet consists of 16 pages, including various photos of the band members, single sleeve covers, original credits, reissue credits, a new band interview, and a lengthy April 2015 essay by Malcolm Dome. The back sleeve includes a brief overview by Derek Oliver.

Overall, Rock Candy did a very nice job with this reissue. Then again, the label tends to do great work. Obviously, a bunch of time and care was given to this project, so I really hate to rate it fewer than 5 stars. However, I have to subtract a star for the missing 3:38 "Edited Version" of "Kyrie" and the slightly misleading listings of "Kyrie" and "Broken Wings" as extended versions. I still highly recommend this reissue, regardless.

Welcome To The Real World by Mr. Mister is hands down one of the best, most well crafted rock CD's of the 1980's. If you love rock from the 1980's and do not yet have this CD, I highly recommend you buy it. I bought it because it was advertised to be digitally remastered. Sadly, it is not a digital remaster. Or it was very poorly done if it is. It does not sound any better than the original I bought back in 1990 with my first CD player. So if you have an original, no need to buy this one. Track by track let me give my thoughts on the songs.

"Black/White" is a hard edged guitar and drum driven rocker that is a great opening song that hooks you right away. The song showcases Richard Page as a singer with the vocal prowess of Lou Gramm from Foreigner during their early days (up to Foreigner 4).
"Uniform Of Youth" moves at a slightly slower, more rhythmic pace than "Black/White. This establishes the band as a multifaceted group. It is a song of youthful exuberance, of a rebel longing to find a place to fit in.
"Don't Slow Down" is an energetic anthem that is inspiring lyrically and pulsing rhythmically "Don't slow down, don't lose the magic, we've come too far to turn back now."
"Run To Her" showcases Richard Page's vocal ability to sing a beautiful love song. Although "Broken Wings" is the groups' best known ballad, "Run To Her" would have made a popular wedding song had it been released as a single.
"Into My Own Hands" is an inspirational song about taking charge and making the most out of what you have been given in life.
"Is It Love", the third single released from the CD, is a lyrically simple song, but it's hard crunching rock makes for a good song over all.
"Kyrie", the second single released from the CD, is my personal favorite of the three singles. It is a soaring song musically and vocally. With it's Christian title (Latin for "Lord Have Mercy"), the spirit of the song is one of asking for guidance in this crazy world.
"Broken Wings", the first single from the CD and the band's best known song, is a powerful ballad about a man in love striving to do his part to fix what is broken in his relationship.
"Tangent Tears" is a synth and guitar driven song with a catchy melody and clever lyrics "I cry when you're not here, I keep crying tangent tears."
The title track, "Welcome To The Real World", finishes off the CD. This song is my second favorite on the CD after "Black/White." The song is a beautiful yet somewhat cynical song written by co-collaborator John Lang. Lang seemingly wrote this song based on the experience of welcoming a newborn child into this world. "Welcome little one, to this place of earth and stone. Welcome little one, all blue eyes and innocence. The world is so much colder than your own soft glance." So moving is this song for me that I have given this song to the parents of two children whose births and lives have had profound effects on my life.
So that finishes my review of this CD. May my brief synopsis of the songs help you decide to buy this CD. Please do, you'll be glad you did!!

Even though this has been remastered, it’s not the original version which in comparison I prefer. The vocals seem to be a bit strained and harsh. If only the record company remastered the original ~ then this would have been a great copy.
