I wanted a UD vest because I am used to carrying a water bottle in the front. I chose the Fastpack 30 over the Fastpack 20, even though the 20 L should be sufficient volume for me. The Fastpack 30 has a closed zippered front pocket, which the Fastpack 20 does not have. After using the PB Vest, it is hard to go back to a vest or pack that does not have zippered front pockets on the shoulder straps.
What I like about the Fastpack 30:
1) it is super light for a pack that can fit 30 L. When it is empty, you can barely feel it on your back.
2) it has a lot of pockets
3) the spin drift is huge; the pack can really hold a ton of stuff
What I don't like about the Fastpack 30
1) the pocket behind the zippered front pocket on the right shoulder strap is way too tight and deep; if you put a small item like a key in this pocket, you will have to take the pack off and shake it upside down to get the item out
2) the open bottom pocket on the right strap juts out like an ash tray; a velcro closure would have made sense rather than an open pocket
3) the bottle holder on the left shoulder strap does not hold UD bottles very well; the bottom of the pocket pinches and squeezes the bottle upwards
4) the shoulder straps are very wide at the bottom, much wider than the Signature series straps. I am not sure why this is necessary.
5) the price
Because the Fastpack 30 can expand so much, the Z-compression straps can dangle when the pack isn't totally full. The clever designers at UD can surely come up with some sort of clip to not have dangling straps
For its price, it should at least come with a UD water bottle and a whistle. It also does not come with the stretchy loops on the front shoulder straps that are found on the PB Vest and the Ultravesta.
At this moment I give it 5 stars. Would I recommend it? Sort of. It is over-priced in my opinion, but there is nothing else on the market that is as light, holds as much stuff so comfortably, and is as versatile.
Update May 30, 2015: I have dropped the pack to 4 stars from 5. I just find that it is bounces sideways if not meticulously packed. Even when really carefully packed, it still bounces up and down with loads greater than 10 lbs. That really wears on the shoulders while running. I can't picture myself running with this pack for more than a few hours. I suppose UD did not specifically say it was a good running vest; however, when elite ultrarunners are used in the promotional video, it is easy to assume that this pack can be used for running. Even when using for lightweight backpacking, I do not find it particularly comfortable. I think that the pack needs two more horizontal compression straps and a vertical compression strap. The Z-straps do not appear to be enough to keep the pack contents tightly held in place. Unlike UD's PB Adventure and AK Race Vests, which I would buy immediately again should mine wear out, I would not buy the Fastpack 30 again.
Update June 4, 2016: The right shoulder strap of this pack is all crinkled. Sometimes i wear the pack on one shoulder if I know I have to take it off often. The extra wear and tear of the right shoulder strap has made a difference in the longevity of one side of the pack. The rest of the pack is still decent. The shoulder straps also look dirty because UD went cheap, and instead of using the soft edge banding found on V2 of their Signature Series, went with an inferior edge banding that got discolored. The edge banding of this pack could definitely be improved with a softer fabric.
Update April 18, 2017: The pack is now two years old, and has sustained heavy, but not rough, use. Seams on he top right shoulder strap are starting to fray. The right shoulder strap is really crinkled. The water bottle holder's plastic clip has broken, so the pocket can no longer be tightened. There is some wear in the laminate in the inside of the bag. I have been careful not to pack sharp items in the pack because once the laminate is punctured, it peels quickly. No rips or tears so far. The new Fastpacks have come out now, but I think the Fastpack 30 is a better deal than the new ones on price. My Fastpack 30 still has a lot of use ahead, so I am pleased with the purchase, even though I don't think this pack, or the new ones, can justify their increasingly rising MSRP.
This was a particularly good deal for me on wicked sale, however the pack I received reeked of someone's laundry fragrances, to which I am sensitive ( didn't notice till it was warm and sweaty). The pack can be washed by hand with the sheet removed (frame sheet has an open-cell foam middle layer which could get nasty if it filled with water), but it's not bombproof, so don't pick it up full of water, etc. I don't think the fragrance will ever come out completely, however, from the elastane-rich stretch pockets, or the frame sheet foam. Nevertheless, I continue to use it and try to de-stink it, although it poisons me and the bears. That's how much I like it.
Also a great bag for hikes and long runs when you need to carry a little extra.
