With obi attached,it is worth collected item.

When playing the Vinyl, I was a bit baffled by the fact that the first disc plays at normal album speed, but the second disc plays at 45. There is no indication on the album that this is supposed to be this way. Other than that, the album is definitely one of her best when it comes to writing and production. Though, I recognize this is probably not an album for fans who are looking for dance or 80's/90's production. It's quite serious in nature and very reflective of whom she was at the time. She was married to Guy Ritchie and was living the "English" lifestyle and while she still was pushing buttons, you can tell she was trying to live a more conservative style that really does ring true to she really is these days and fore being married to Guy. I don't believe she was faking it, but I think it was a evolution period for her that seemed a bit too stuffy for a woman who has been known for saying and doing some pretty brash and outlandish things.
Qué paradoja, no?
Mis tracks favoritos en orden: Nothing Fails, Nobody Knows Me, I’m so Stupid, American Life, Intervention, X-Static Process, Love Profusion, Hollywood, Mother and Father, Die another Day, aunque este último no pega en el álbum ni con cola.
The first song is the title song 'American Life'. It's not the best song on the album but its not bad. It doesn't deserve the reviews from critics. The song is about the American/ Western way of life and the Materialistic world in which we live. Madonna sings of how she has it all, the American dream, money, cars etc. But says this isn't enough and it isn't important. Nearing the end of the song, Madonna raps about the people that she has working for her. the song is catchy and different from most of Madonna's other music. I like it and i think that the idea is strong.
Next is Hollywood, one of my personal favorites. Again it speaks of the american life and focuses on the highs and lows of Hollywood and fame. the composition and production are great! it's a addictive song and gets anybody up on the Dance floor. I would buy the album for this single!! and the remixes on the CD single are good too
'I'm so stupid' the title for the song basically says it all. the lyrics focus on how Madonna has realised money and fame are not everything and that she has 'woken up' and is beginning to learn why we are here (on the planet).
The fourth song and the final single- 'Love profusion'. its just got a great sound to it. i really like it! and think its a good song
'Nobody knows me' follows and talks of the media and government giving us a 'social disease' and Madonna says she doesn't want it nor will she accept it. the song was also a single. it isn't particularly a great song and is one of the weaker ones on the album.
'Nothing fails' is in places a reminder of Madonna's mega-hit Like a Prayer. the choir and gospel influences work well for the song. lyrically it talks of love and religion.
'Intervention' starts with an acoustic guitar. The song highlights the lyrics and Madonna's voice. its simple but a great song. Again its about love and how a relationship will last.
'X-static Process' is the 8th track. It's a song that questions the modern life that we live. its another simple acoustic guitar song that is beautiful.
'Mother and Father' is the ninth track and one of my personal favourites. I find that it oozes emotion. The song is about the death of Madonna's mother when she was 5. it talks about the pain in which she felt from that and then discusses the aftermath and her father. Madonna says she's 'got to let it out' and i think that's what the song is all about, letting go of her mums death. It's a matter the has affected Madonna throughout her life and career and this song is about dealing with the pain of losing her mother and truly letting her father know how she felt. The composition is a drum and bass with a guitar.
The tenth song 'Die another Day' is quite possibly my favourite song from the album. It was the theme song for the 20th Bond film of the same name. I love the composition, the attitude and the way Madonna sings it. It was the first song i really remember hearing from Madonna when growing up. its heavily edited and has effects on her voice along with a electronic sound, yet still has instruments like Violins. Personally, i think its brilliant.
The final song is 'Easy Ride'. its mostly string orientated song and talks of age and Madonna's feelings towards growing older, how she wanted to be young forever and then getting to a place where she is happy in life. the best ballad like song on the album.
Overall, the album has some highs and some lows. It's not Like a Prayer or Ray of light but it is very good! Madonna always comes back with something new and different and of course there will be things that people don't like. but i would recommend it to anyone.
the Album got mixed reviews from critics who said it was confused, and i agree in parts it does sound confused but i think that at this point in her life Madonna was confused and was truing to straighten it out. the album will grow on you if you dont like it at first. just like it has on many critics.
4.5*
Interestingly, for an album that had faced such harsh ridicule and contempt, I actually find AMERICAN LIFE to be a solidly good effort from Madonna, containing some of her very best material, and marred only by a couple of complete missteps. In fact, I feel that AMERICAN LIFE is quite superior to 2000's MUSIC album. MUSIC was highly praised by most fans and critics, but I found it to be an inconsistent and awkward affair, salvaged only by the title track and "What it feels like for a Girl." AMERICAN LIFE is simply a much stronger album, and is completely undeserving of the ire it often receives from the masses.
Working primarily again with Mirwais Ahmadzai, AMERICAN LIFE is very much an extension of the techno/folk blend that began on Music with such songs as "I Deserve It" and "Don't Tell Me." I found this combination to be unnerving and gaudy on MUSIC, but Madonna and Ahmadzai are far more successful in combining these elements on AMERICAN LIFE. This is primarily because on this disc (and unlike on the MUSIC album) the duo has actually written a solid set of songs for this album rather than simply rely on the various production gimmicks as they did on their previous outing. Madonna's much-criticized political and spiritual ramblings often do come off as ham-fisted and naïve, but she is conversely very successful in the bittersweet personal refection that marks the very best of her "serious" work.
Although they each contain various techno flourishes, songs like "Love Profusion," "Nothing Fails," "Intervention," "X-Static Process," and "Easy Ride" are confessional, reflective numbers that feature some of Madonna's most melodic vocals and are backed with relatively sparse production that gives each of them a sort of hushed intensity. It is a testament to the songwriting of Madonna and company that any of these songs would have been just as effective in a completely acoustic setting. Sadly, the otherwise cleverly-written "I'm So Stupid" falls victim to too many production gimmicks, with too much vocal-processing on the chorus (after a reasonably subdued verse) making Madonna's voice sound way too shrill and unpleasant. This number would have benefitted from striped down further.
While Madonna and Ahmadzai finally succeed at crafting their own brand of techno/folk, the duo also crank out a couple terrific pure dance tunes as well. Although the Madonna's lyrics for "Hollywood" are rather simplistic and pedestrian, the songs sails on it's killer hook and a lively discotheque arrangement that eases down like aural cotton candy (and I like the Oakenfold remix even better). "Hollywood" is great fun, but "Nobody Knows Me" leaves me absolutely breathless! A stunning assault of deep dance beats and airy vocals soaring through an instantly memorable refrain, "Nobody Knows Me" is an unheralded masterpiece in Madonna's canon of songs and deserves to be referenced along with "Vogue" and "Ray of Light" as one of Madonna's very finest dance recordings.
Unfortunately, AMERICAN LIFE also features three of Madonna's biggest blunders. Frankly, the album versions of the title track and "Mother and Father" are the most mind-numbingly terrible sins that Madonna has ever unleashed upon the unsuspecting public. In it's original album incarnation, "Mother and Father" appears to be completely devoid of any melody, and Madonna's sounds unnaturally high-pitched to the point of being completely unlistenable. Ironically, I greatly enjoy the Peter Rauhofer remix of "Mother and Father," which drops the ill-suited, chilly European sythns of the Madonna/Ahmadzai-produced original and adds dark down beats that manage to ground Madonna's helium-voiced delivery and make a satisfying contrast. From listening to the effective remix next to the abysmal remix, it is clear that Rauhofer had much better instincts on how to handle the material than either Madonna or Ahmadzai.
I feel very much the same way about the painful title track, which is possibly Madonna's worst recording since 1986's "Jimmy Jimmy" (which was possibly the most irritating recording ever recorded by ANYONE). The album mix of the title track finds Madonna delivering the most inane political/spiritual/materialistic rant of her career against the backdrop of what sounds like Ahmadzai operating a dentist's drill - and Madonna actually attempts a full-fledged rap, of which she succeeds about as well as my 80-year old grandmother would at attempting the same feat! Shock above all shocks, I actually like the Rauhofer remix of this horrendous track, which would more accurately be described as a complete overhaul of the song rather than a simple remix. Rauhofer adds an appropriately heavy, but still reasonably paced backing that gives the song a completely different, vastly improved feel, and fortunately removes all of Madonna's unfortunate attempt at rap.
The album also picks up 2002's soundtrack hit "Die Another Day," which is not only one of Madonna's weakest recordings, but also the worst Bond theme ever. I was a bit surprised to see this track make an appearance here, as Madonna has been notorious about excluding various soundtrack hits on surrounding albums in the past. Perhaps Madonna and Ahmadzai were a bit short on material for this album, or maybe Warner Bros. pressured the duo to include a proven hit on the disc? Anyhow, AMERICAN LIFE would have benefitted by dropping the threadbare "Day" altogether.
Overall, Madonna's AMERICAN LIFE is good album with some of Madonna's absolute best material, and quite undeserving of the thrashing it still commonly receives from both critics and fans. Although the album is marred by two of Madonna's worst-ever recordings, even those two monstrosities were improved greatly by subsequent remixes. I really wish Madonna utilized someone like Rauhofer as her producer for this project instead of Ahmadzai, and maybe even performed a few of the best songs (like "Intervention" or "X-Static Process") completely acoustic. As is, the album is still much better than it's unfortunately tarnished reputation.
