    数字にまつわる人々の物語を、
    寝る前に、暖炉の前で話してくれる物知り爺ちゃんから聞きたいな、
    という人におすすめの本です。

    他のレビュアーの方もかいていますが、
    数学が嫌いである人に、あっそうだったんだな、こんなに面白い人々のドラマがあったんだ、
    そう感じさせてくれる本です。

    最初の発明から、読み続けると、なるほど、全ての学問の進歩は相互作用を及ぼしているのだ、と感じる。色々な分野が混じってはいるが、年表一覧もあるので、みやすいし、誰かの発見が、何につながったのか、を頭の中でつなぎあわせていくのは、推理小説の謎解きのように面白いです。

    　学校で習うことはいつも「何年に何があったか」だけ。
    それがどんな影響をもったのか、それは人々の暮らしをどう変えたのか、それから何が始まったのかなんてことは教えてちゃくれない。
    　この本は年代を追って分かりやすく、アシモフならではのユーモアを交えて優しく説明してくれる。今私たちがこうしてパソコンの前に座っているのは何故か？
    　全て先人達が試行錯誤しながら発見してきたのだ！
    　大人は勿論、現在勉強をしている方にもお勧めな一冊。
    理科や化学なんて面白くない…そんなあなたの考えを払拭するに違いない。

    Asimov was a amazing treasure trove of knowledge in his own right, and was equally skilled in writing both Scientific non-Fiction and fiction. This book is no exception, and it is a shame that it has become difficult to find this amazing piece of work.

    Asimov's Chronology of Science and Discovery is a fascinating compendium of ALL human discovery since the beginning of human society. While this may sound like a standard reference book, it is far more than that. Asimov organizes the entire book by year with a very comprehensive index. He managed to bring humor and candor, brevity and comprehensiveness, to the history of all human ingenuity in a way that causes the reader to suddenly discover that he/she has been reading for far longer than they had initially planned.

    Asimov keeps the writing accessible, and had a remarkable ability to distill even the most complex of ideas and concepts into everyday language....AND still keep it interesting to read. You can open this book to any page and just start reading.

    Interlaced with the wonderful descriptions of each of the small steps in human creativity and knowledge, are wonderful footnotes and minor tangents that paint a vivid picture of the world at any given point in history. You end up visualizing each of these discoveries in the context of the world at that point in history, which adds both weight and meaning to their piece of the greater puzzle of science and discovery.

    In the end this book is neither a reference book nor a history book. In truth it is a little of both, but compiled and written by a remarkable author who understood how to keep a readers interest and draw parallels to everyday experience.

    This is a much read for any true fans of history or science.

    I recently purchased this book, attracted by the promise that it was "Updated and Illustrated." However, upon receiving it, I was very disappointed to find that it contains no illustrations whatsoever—not even a single one. This is highly misleading and frustrating, especially since the illustrations were one of the main reasons I chose this edition.

    It feels like they simply repackaged the old version with a new cover and falsely advertised it as something more. I expected better quality control from the seller. If you're looking for an illustrated edition, I strongly suggest looking elsewhere. This was a big letdown. I will try to return.

    This book is a must have for anyone who, like me, appreciates Asimov's nonfiction writing as much as his fiction. That said, this book skims over such a huge array of topics that the dedicated Asimov reader must supplement it with as many of the master's short nonfiction books (those consisting of essays previously published in various periodicals) as can be found.
    The book, a ruggedly bound, obviously former library volume, arrived in excellent condition. I will buy from this seller again.

    Naturally this book is getting out of date, but it is available used for less than the cost of shipping. For me, the best part is the time-line in the front of the book. It starts with the invention of fire and works it way to the late 1980s. The rest of the text is also in chronological order with short, often way too short, descriptions of the various events. I have to think that Asimov wrote some of this just from memory because the book lacks references.
