And with fans voicing their disappointment that their other favorites are not getting a chance, AKB48 creator/producer came up with the idea of the janken senbatsu. Which is a battle via rock-paper-scissors in a major tournament and the top 16 getting a chance to be part of what would be called a janken single and the person who comes out in top, becoming the primary center of the single and the music video, as well as being promoted in publications and television. So, pretty much a person who can unranked, can become the center of the next AKB48 single.
In September, the 1st Janken Taikai (rock-paper-scissors tournament) was held in Nippon Budokan with 51 members competing, Mayumi Uchida, an unranked member of AKB48 became the first winner of the first Janken Taikai. Following her are #2 - Haruka Ishida, #3 - Haruna Kojima, #4 Jaruka Nakagawa, #5 Ami Maeda, #6 Sumire Sato, #7 - Natsuki Sato, #8 Aki Takajo, #9 Tomomi Nakatsuka, #10 Asuka Kuramochi, #11 Kana Kobayashi, #12 Miku Tanabe, #13 Tomomi Kasai, #14 Sakiko Matsui, #15 Atsuko Maeda and #16 Rina Chikano.
The janken single will also be a holiday single and will be released in four different versions. Type-A, Type-K and Type-B will feature the winners of the Senbatsu on the front cover. While all three will feature the main janken track "Chance no Junban" and the Christmas track "Yoyakushita Christmas", each of the three will have a different third track performed by Team A, Team K and Team B. Also, each of the three will be a CD+DVD release with the DVD containing the music videos for the three tracks and three separate parts of the first annual Janken tournament. The fourth version is the theater edition which comes with no DVD but comes with the first two tracks and a third track performed by the Team Research Students (Kenkyusei).
The single sold over 471,000 on its first day, a little lower than the last single "Beginner", but is to be expected as the lineup of "Chance no Junban" does not not feature the primary (and most popular) members.
The version that I will be reviewing is Team-A which features Sumire Sato, Haruka Nakagawa, Haruka Ishida, Mayumi Uchida, Haruna Kojima and Ami Maeda on a front red cover. The 14 page booklet features the lyrics and production credits, but also solo photos of each member (that are featured on the cover) with a handwritten message or drawing by the person featured, written all around their photo. While the back CD cover features members of Team-B. Plus a small flyer promoting an AKB48 mahjong game.
The first track on the single is the janken track "Chance no Junban" (which translates to "The Turn of Chance"). The track is a a fun pop track with a cool, catchy chorus and a pretty upbeat track overall. The song is inspirational as it revolves around a person getting a chance to win. No matter how many times you have lost, to not give up on your dreams. And how luck goes around like a game of rock-paper-scissors game. For one to believe in themselves and as long as they have a voice, they can keep shining.
The second track is titled "Yoyaku shita Christmas" (which translates to "Booked Christmas") and is a holiday song that is an upbeat pop track with cool brass and Christmas bells in the background. The single features the primary senbatsu 14 members along with Ami Maeda and Mika Komori. The song is about a couple promising to meet on Christmas Eve and sharing their first silent night and eventually a booked Christmas. And how the two held each other under the Christmas tree during the holy night.
The third track on the single is "Kurumi to Dialogue" (which translates "A Dialogue with a Walnut") and is performed by Team A. And this is an awesome track with deep bass beats and a western dance arrangement. The song is about a person who has a hard shell like a walnut, but once you crack it open and it reveals that person's heart, should the person she like's understand her better? And the more the guy is with her and the more he plays with her, with a little force...she would be unable to resist. What should she do? She wants to do it..
The remaining three tracks on the album are the instrumental versions of the first three primary tracks.
As for the DVD, the single begins with "Chance no Junban" which is a song featuring the top 15 janken senbatsu members performing and dancing to "Chance no Junban". Each are dressed in white outfits with a beautiful set and clips from the first janken senbatsu. It was interesting to see Mayumi Uchida and other members that you usually don't see in the music videos, taking part in this PV. It was a different feel from the typical top senbatsu members especially not seeing Atsuko or Yuko upfront. But Mayumi Uchida, is a fun member to watch, she may be short and unranked, but it's great to see her and other members getting a chance to be in the limelight.
For the second music video "Yoyaku shita Christmas", the video features the group in their Christmas outfits and taking part of a Christmas performance and a tie-in with 7-11 with the holiday food and items. A fun Christmas music video overall.
For the third music video "Kurumi to Dialogue", Team A is seen studying in their desks on stage and then we see the girls dancing with their school girl outfits with a white background and then another version of themselves in their idol outfits with a black background and showing the nice girls being tempted by sexy dance idols to join them.
The fourth video features the first part (about ten minutes long) of the Janken Taikai documentary and how the members reacted when they were told that the 19th single center and participants would be determined via a janken tournament. This first part features the first round of the Janken tournament.
It's important to note that this is a region 2 DVD and will not play on a region 1 player (unless you have a non-region DVD player) but can be played on a MAC or PC using free video playing software such as VLC or Daum PotPlayer.
Overall, I am very pleased with this janken single. It gives a major chance for unknown members, unranked members who have never been in a music video or receive any media spotlight, a chance to become part of the limelight. I know nothing about Mayumi Uchida but it was a pleasure just to see how the Janken Taikai gave her a chance of a lifetime. To become the center of "Chance no Junban" and receive whatever free media promotion that they can get from this experience. So, I'm happy that Akimoto gave these girls a chance!
As for the Type-A version of this single release, all three songs are catchy, upbeat and fun. And for the music portion alone, Type-A is my favorite among the two other types and the theater edition. "Chance no Junban" is a fun song, "Yoyaku shita Christmas" is a fun Christmas song and "Kurumi to Dialogue" is just all out awesome!
Overall, the 19th CD single from AKB48 is catchy, upbeat and awesome! Recommended!
