After much research, and even more youtube videos I settled on the 625s, and I love it.
I use it while backpacking and fishing, use it in the dry-bag while rafting open water, in the boat, and at the campsite. In all regards the 625s has performed wonderfully. Bass is a little lacking, but if you position the speaker against a surface to reflect the sound off of, it is more than adequate. The bass response is there, just doesn't carry that well.
After about 10 months of near daily use the power switch broke. It wasn't dropped or anything, just broke. In the on position. I could hear a small rattle inside and knew that it was probably a slider type switch that had separated from its housing. After checking the purchase date here on Amazon I made a warranty request through Braven's warranty page.
The email response was not as timely as I would have liked, but nevertheless my request was approved and I shipped the defective unit off. Today I received my replacement and I am thoroughly impressed with what I received!
I was expecting my old unit back with a new switch, but Braven sent me a *COMPLETE* sealed in the box replacement.
Total turn around time from initial request, to shipped replacement was about 3 weeks.
Great battery life
Decent sound for its size
Annoying sound when the speaker shuts down from low power (wakes you up if you fall asleep listening to music)
Included usb cable only charges the speaker, does not work with my Droid
Overall I still love the 625s, I would have rated 4 stars for the defective switch, but Braven went above and beyond with my replacement.
Volume output is good, sound quality at high volumes is acceptable for music and audio with reasonable levels of base.
The waterproof bag is an interesting feature, it is absolutely wonderful at the beach, and certainly looks and sounds slightly better than a ZipLoc bag. Honestly it's most useful for
storing the charger and cords, because of the color it's pretty hard to loose.
Even without the bag the unit is built to take a good splash with little to no effect. You would have to blast water directly at a USB port to do any harm.
Battery life is very very good. Minimal draw when the unit is on standby. I leave mine turned on all day with my iPad and basically charge it about half as often as the iPad.
If the speaker is fully charged, used an hour or two and you plug a dead iPhone into it, the phone will charge to about 80% before the speaker is depleted.
It was on sale when I bought it on Amazon. Definitely a better deal than on the comparable Jambox, which lacks the rubber coating and the flashlight.
UPDATE: Summer 2013. The on/off switch failed after about 10 months of moderate use. I contacted Braven customer support, and they were very good about issuing a repair/replace number. I sent the defective unit back and Braven promptly sent a new unit to me. Very happy with their customer service.
I could see this happening, not a sturdy button, if I used it constantly. But I only used the speaker once a week for a class I teach. So 40 times? Maybe a few extra at home?
