So I've used this a little more over the past few months, and the other day a dyson rep commented on my review which made me give it a second chance and think about it more in depth. I always use it on max setting because I'm just trying to pick up tiny little bits of dust and 6 minutes is more than enough time. I'll sweep my floor and use a dustpan, but there is always a little strip of fine dust that I can't get with the dustpan, and that's what I use the dyson for. I bought this expecting it to work for quick little 10 second jobs like that, but it struggles to do even basic stuff. Also, when I do plug in the charger, it whines with a very high pitched note that is audible in the other room. It's the only power adapter I've ever owned that did that.
If you check my review history, I'm mostly positive about every purchase, all 4-5 stars. But this product was a huge waste of my money. I paid a premium thinking it would tackle jobs with ease, and instead I am moving the thing back and forth over the surface, trying holding it at different angles, meanwhile the exhaust ports are blowing the dust around and dispersing my pile I've just sweeped. When I use it, it's really loud, I don't know how all of that power is wasted because it sounds like a jet taking off. And then the charger whines/screams. It just seems like all of the design of this product went into making it look cool so they could sell many, and it's actual functionality was an afterthought.
I was prepared to be underwhelmed. I've used handheld vacuums built by Black & Decker and Hoover previously, and they were break-prone pains in the derriére. But we've had the DC34 for several months now and have found it to be a spectacular addition to our house-cleaning arsenal.
The one reason it didn't get five stars is the battery life. While they advertise 15 or 16 minutes as battery life, I'm lucky to get anything over ten minutes of cleaning per charge. The battery size and capacity were clearly designed for spot jobs. If you're doing an entire house's window sills, prepare to wait an hour between sessions.
That said, there are a ton of positives -- It's solid, very well built, easy to dump and clean out. Like Dyson's other recent products, it's got a space-age look to it that can make it an interesting find for house visitors.
And it cleans like an... animal? It pulls up stuff I didn't know a handheld could handle -- onion skins, wads of paper, wrappers, lumps of who-knows-what the baby took out of his mouth -- along with the standard dust and animal hair, all with great speed and ease.
An excellent product, highly recommended.
A few people have complained about their battery life but there are two settings of force and it will go quickly on high but works fine on the lower setting and lasts longer. Also with these types of products don't leave the vacuum on the charger too long because it will harm your battery/life by burning it out. Just needs a 15 minute charge and good to go
However, because it's got great suction and is much easier to grab and use than its corded big brother I've found myself using it for a lot of small clean up jobs. It sucks up dust bunnies, spider webs, the remains of the kids art projects, spilled coffee grinds, seed the parakeets kick out of their cage, etc.
All around great machine. The bin is sized right for the running time. Handle, weight, trigger, and balance work well for me.
The reason I'm not giving this vacuum 5 stars is because according to the manual you must wait until the battery cools before charging. Since the battery gets hot when you use the device that means you can't plug it in for charging after using it. That's more thinking than I like to put into my appliances. I'd give it 5 stars if I could just plug it in to re-charge after any use.
