This is a great book for anyone new to database design. Although the book's focus is on MySQL Database, it introduces some basics of database design in the way that is easy enough for newbies to follow yet still informative for those with prior database experience. Among the topics discussed in the book are installation, MySQL syntax, database development in MySQL and using APIs. What I really liked about the book is its throughness in explaining just how MySQL works. Unlike other books that I have seen that tended to focus on MySQL's performance in conjunction with APIs such as Perl and PHP, the book managed to stay focused on the database itself, which I appreciated a lot not having much experience with databases on the professional level previously.
