キャラクターグッズでお馴染みのスヌーピーと、主人公のチャーリー・ブラウン、ルーシー、ライナスといった子供達が、可愛らしい外見に似合わないシュールな人生観を展開する漫画。日本ではあまり馴染みが無いかもしれませんが、連載開始の1950年から現在まで、ピーク時には世界中の2600紙もの新聞に掲載された超人気4コマ漫画です。

ただの4コマ漫画と侮るなかれ。ギャグ漫画としてゲラゲラ笑えるのはもちろん、惨めな気持ちになる登場人物の姿に自分を重ねたり、励まされたり、子供とは思えない哲学的なセリフに人生を考えさせられたりする奥の深い漫画です。

この本（A peanuts book featuring Snoopy (1) ）は1986年9月から約半年分のデイリー版がほぼ連載順通りに収められています。（コマ割りの関係で多少前後しているところもありますが、ページの端っこを見て下さい。ちゃんと日付が書いてありますよ！）コマの中に英語がそのまま、コマの外に谷川俊太郎さん訳の日本語が載っています。英語は苦手！という方は難しく考えずに日本語で楽しんで、英語で読もうという方もチラッと日本語訳も読んでみてはいかがでしょう。谷川さんの訳は味があってとても素敵だと思います。

同じシリーズのA peanuts book featuring Snoopy（2〜26）には1987年からデイリー版最終回の2000年1月3日分までが順に収められています。1巻を読んで興味を持たれた方はこちらもお勧めします。（全部買うとかなりの金額になってしまいますが…。）

1986年以前の作品ですが、以前同じ角川から出版されていましたが残念ながら今は絶版になっており、英語と日本語訳の両方が載った本を手に入れるのはやや難しいと思います。年代関係なくテーマごとに集めた本も出ていますので、そちらで読むか、図書館やオークションで探してみる…くらいでしょうか。
参考までに、現在 Fantagraphics Books社からComplete Peanutsという全ての作品を収めた本が出版されています。ピーナッツの漫画すべてを収録した初めてのシリーズとのことです。ただし、全て英語で値段も高めです。

すっごいかわいいし、面白いですよ！本当に笑えます！４コママンガって、一、二回読むと、あきますよね。でも、スヌーピーは飽きないんです。何回読んでも笑えます。それに、英語と日本語の両方が書いてあるから、英語の勉強にもなりますよ。面白くて、可愛くて、ためになる。そんなマンガはあまりありませんよ！ぜひ、買ってみてください。

ふきだしの中には恐らく原作のままの英語が書いてあって、
そのコマの脇にセリフの和訳が載ってます。

和訳はせいぜい見たいところだけ見れれば良かったので、
どうしても目に付く所に書かれると避けて読むのは疲れます。
英語の漫画として読みたい人にはお勧めできません。
