マリリン・モンローは、二〇世紀アメリカの巨大なマス・メディアがつくりあげたセクシーな「女」の記号です。一九六二年、ウォーホルは彼女の死亡のニュースが流れると即座に彼女を題材にすることを決めます。生前、マリリンは自分自身と、スクリーンが生み出したセクシーな彼女の虚像とのギャップに苦しみました。彼女は、本当の自分を見いだそうとさまざまな人生遍歴を歩みましたが、それがまたマスコミにスキャンダラスにとりあげられ、ますますその虚像をふくらませていきました。彼女の悲劇は現代の記号による疎外の象徴です。マリリンはその悲劇性にも高められ、私たちの情感を刺激する「女」の記号の典型となりました。ウォーホルのねらいは、完全なイメージの記号となったマリリンを使い、現代の記号性と私たちの情感の関係をあからさまにすることです。ウォーホルは、同じ一つの記号がマス（大衆）としての私たちに一斉に同じ感情的な反応を呼び起こす事実を、驚きをもってとりあげています。
