【1797-1858】寛政9年生まれ、江戸時代の浮世絵師。江戸の町火消しの安藤家に生まれ家督を継ぎ、その後に浮世絵師となったが 現代広く呼ばれる安藤広重（あんどう ひろしげ）なる名前は使用しておらず、浮世絵師としては歌川広重が正しいと言えるでしょう。幼い頃から絵心が勝り、文化8年（1811年）（15歳）頃、はじめ初代歌川豊国の門に入ろうとしたが、門生満員でことわられ、歌川豊廣（1773年?-1828年）に入門、翌文化9年（1812年）に歌川廣重の名を与えられた。歌川広重の作品は、ヨーロッパやアメリカでは、大胆な構図などとともに、青色、特に藍色の美しさで評価が高く、この鮮やかな青は藍（インディゴ）の色であり、欧米では「ジャパンブルー」、あるいはフェルメール・ブルーになぞらえて「ヒロシゲブルー」とも呼ばれるようになりました。安政5年没。享年62。友人歌川豊国の筆になる「死に絵」（＝追悼ポートレートのようなもの。）に辞世の歌が遺っています。「東路へ筆をのこして旅のそら 西のみ国の名ところを見ん」（「西方浄土の名所を見てまわりたい」と詠っている。）死因はコレラだったと伝えられています。
