昭和という時代を大きく揺さぶったスペクタクル大作のサウンドトラックを復刻していく「昭和スペクタクル大作復刻シリーズ」の第一弾は『八甲田山』(1977/東宝)オリジナル・サウンドトラック! 最近では、あの白い犬がおとうさん役の某ケータイ会社のCMでもそのメロディが使用され話題となった、あのサウンドトラックが遂に初CD化決定。 新田次郎の原作を下に、明治34年、ロシア軍と戦うための訓練として、冬の八甲田山を雪中行軍した部隊の過酷な運命をオールスター・キャストで描いた大作。悲しげながら勇ましく美しいメインテーマをはじめ、重厚にオーケストラを聴かせるのは、芥川也寸志!日本音楽界の鬼才であり、70年代では『砂の器』の音楽監督、そして『八つ墓村』の音楽の仕事も有名であるが、なんといっても、70年代の、芥川の代表作は『八甲田山』である。 こちらも、あまりにも名作、名曲で多くの映画ファンはじめ、多くの日本人に親しまれたメロディでありながら、公開当時ワーナー・パイオニアから発売されたサントラ盤がCD化されるのは今回が初となる。 もちろん、オリジナルマスターテープによるデジタルリマスタリング! さらには、メインテーマに歌詞をつけてシングルカットされた「春には花の下で」「大いなる旅」(歌 五堂新太郎)もボーナストラックとして収録決定! もちろん、紙ジャケ! 監督 森谷司郎 脚本 橋本忍 音楽 芥川也寸志 撮影 木村大作 出演 高倉健 北大路欣也 三國連太郎 加山雄三

日本映画音楽史に大きな足跡を残した芥川也寸志の作品のなかでも、『八甲田山』の音楽は多くの人の記憶に残る作品のひとつといえるだろう。八甲田山の音楽を委嘱された芥川は、実際に現地を数回訪れ、イメージを膨らませて作曲に取り組んだという。「美しく、悲しく、雄々しい」とも形容されるメインテーマが、童謡「月の沙漠」にヒントを得て作曲されたことについては芥川自身の証言があるが、抒情的なメロディーは勿論、主旋律と副旋律の処理も見事で、聴きごたえがある。西洋音楽の技法を良く消化したうえで、無理のない形で「日本的」な音楽に仕上げた傑作といえるだろう。CD付属の解説によると、芥川が手掛けた映画音楽で、サントラ盤が出たのはこの八甲田山が初めてだったというから、芥川としても自信作だったのだろう。

このCDは、芥川自身が東京交響楽団を指揮して録音した、当時のサントラLP盤の内容をそっくり移し替え、ボーナストラックとして、メインテーマ二つに詞をつけて演歌調にアレンジした歌（五堂新太郎）を収録したものだ。

芥川の音楽をじっくり楽しみたい向きにはお勧めできる内容だが、難点もある。一つは、かつてのLP版の紙ジャケットをミニチュア化した「紙ジャケ」を採用したため、解説の文字が非常に細かくなり、熟年層には読みにくい（読めない）と思われること。もう一つは演歌調の歌。これについては人によって好みの違いがあるだろうが、悲壮で凛とした映画の世界を、必要以上にメロドラマチックにしてしまい、私としてはなくもがなという印象だった。映画との関連でいえば、軍歌「雪の進軍」でも入れたほうが良くはなかったか。

価格も安いとはいえないし、メインテーマ二つ（映画の冒頭と最期に流れる）を含め、さわりの部分は、芥川の作品を集めたCD（例えば『芥川也寸志forever』）にも収録されているので、さわりだけ聞きたい人にはそちらの方がお得かもしれない。
