小学生の頃母に連れられて映画館で見た映画。DVDの購入は長らく考えていたのですが、廉価版が発売となったため購入を決意。

ながらく買うのをためらっていた原因の一つは画質。古い映画ではたとえDVDでも画質に難を持つものが存在し、かつては痛い目を見たことがあったので。しかしこの映画は問題ありませんでした。大画面でも視聴に耐えられます。

肝心の内容は、感動的な歴史物ファンタジー、スケールの壮大さに心奪われます。小さな頃の感動が再びよみがえってきました。確かにCG全盛の現在から見れば特撮は稚拙、ストーリーも細部にこだわらない大雑把なものですが、全編から感じられる力強さは近年の日本映画でも見られないものではないでしょうか。

真田広之や志穂美悦子の華麗なアクション、夏木マリの妖艶さ、薬師丸ひろ子や岡田奈々のかわいらしさ。今となっても色あせないキャストの演技もこの映画に華を添えています。

私が中学生頃に公開された映画です。
公開前に、鎌田敏夫の原作本を読んでおり、かなり官能的な内容が含まれていたのと、人物描写が詳細であったため、映画でどこまで表現できるのだろうかと思っていました。
実際に映画を見てみると、やはりおおざっぱな内容で、上映時間からすれば仕方のないことかと思いましたが、その代わり作品のダイナミズムにより非常に引き込まれる作品となっていました。
今見るとやはり、特殊効果の部分が何ともばればれでちゃっちい部分もあるのですが、今でも作品の力というのはすごいものがあると思います。
平成になってTBSの時代劇スペシャルで里見八犬伝が制作されましたが、20年以上前の作品に対して作品の力が全く及ばないというのは、制作する意味があったのだろうかと、疑問を投げかけたくなります。
スターウォーズが特殊効果の部分の修正とシーンの追加をして特別編というのを作っているように、この深作版の里見八犬伝も特殊効果の部分を修正し直して追加シーンも作成し里見八犬伝 特別編ってものでも作ってもらえないかと思います。

宿命に導かれ、仲間が徐々に集まり、ひとつの目的に向かっていく娯楽映画です。古典をもとにした王道的ストーリーですが、現在でも楽しめます。三部作ぐらいでもっとじっくり描いてもいいくらいにも思えもしますが、テンポよく物語が展開され飽きさせません。若き真田広之さんや薬師丸ひろ子さんがとてもいいです。保存版として購入してもいい作品だと思います。
