『ほしのこえ』で一躍脚光を浴びた新海誠による初の長編アニメ。日本が南北に分断されたもうひとつの戦後の世界で、謎の病により眠り続ける少女を救うべく、ふたりの少年が奮闘する。『ALWAYS 三丁目の夕日』の吉岡秀隆や萩原聖人らが声を担当。

原因不明の覚醒障害を発病した少女を救おうと奮闘する2人の少年の姿を描く長編アニメーション。日本が南北に分断された、もう一つの戦後の世界。米軍統治下の青森の少年・藤沢ヒロキと白川タクヤは、同級生の沢渡サユリに憧れていた。彼らが見つめる先は彼女と津軽海峡を走る国境線の向こう側、北海道に建設された謎の巨大な塔。いつか自分たちの力であの塔まで飛ぼうと小型飛行機を組み立てるが…。ブルーレイディスク版。

　国家分断という過酷な設定にもかかわらず、彼らの内面にそれらの事象はほとんど反映されていない。圧倒的に占める思いは眠り続ける少女への思いのみ。どこかで読んだことがある、と思ったら、三島由紀夫『金閣寺』でした。祖国の敗戦と占領という、後の三島からすればアイデンティティ・クライシスに陥るほどの重大事件のはずの出来事が、主人公たちの内面にはほとんど擦過するほどの影響も与えていない……なるほど、主人公たちの内面世界に深く沈潜することで珠玉の作品を生み出したのだと考えれば合点がいきます。
　クリエイターのきらめくような才能は、もはや誰もが認めるところですから、あれこれ言いません。ただ、私小説という表現スタイルは容易に自家中毒に陥りやすいこと、そもそも現代日本にとってもはやそれほどの生命力を持ち得ないのではないかという疑問をぬぐい去れないこと（芥川賞の現状を見よ）から、どこかでこのスタイルを脱皮しないと行き詰まる危うさも感じています。
　もちろん、これは非難しているのではなく、作者の才能を高く評価するからこそ危惧するところです。

新海誠監督によるオリジナルアニメーション。
映像は綺麗です。
フィルムグレイン処理はありませんのでくっきりと鮮明な映像。
作画の出来としては「秒速5センチメール」のほうが高い気がしますが、それでも作り込みはすごいです。
その細かい描写を丁寧かつしっかりと再現しています。
輪郭は少し弱めになっていますがしっかり再現できていますし、破綻する箇所も皆無。
他のBDアニメ作品と比べてもかなり綺麗に感じる事ができます。
やはり高い水準の映像美です。
音は中々。
高音がよく伸び通る音です。
澄んだ綺麗な音の広がりが実によい。
低音部分は作品的に弱いのと、サラウンド感が思ったより全然感じなかったのですが、音自体は楼質。
セリフ部分も聞き取り易いですしいい音質だと思います。
内容は架空の日本を舞台にしたアニメ。
困ったのが設定の分かりにくさ。
舞台が日本でありながら、架空の世界を描いておりますので時代背景や設定などついていくのが大変です。
さらに展開的にも難解な箇所が多いので、疑問系を抱きつつ見てしまう事に。
とは言え、相変わらずの綺麗で独特な空気感のある映像は大変よく引き込まれます。
とにかく内容の好みはかなり別れそう。
自分はラストも含めて、なんだったのか、何故なのか、という疑問ばかり浮かんでしまい消化不良でした。
特典はHD画質で予告や特報のみ。
パッケージ内には8Pのブックレットなど同梱されており中々。
映像の美しさはさすがですが、内容は好みが別れる作品だと思います。

本作はDVDを持っていますが、ハイビジョン環境が整ったので、せっかくですから買ってみようと思います。
割り引いても6千円、DVDと抱き合わせて1万円越えという商品もあるなか、この値段は立派なものですし、
好きな作品でもありますので、ぜひきれいな映像を見てみたいと思ったからです。
（本音を言えば、定価で５千円以下がいいのですが・・・）
できれば今後、次世代DVDのアニメ作品は、この値段を基準にして欲しいですね。
