1990年代にデビューしたフロリダ出身のデス系メタルバンド「Cynic」による唯一のアルバムです。1993年発売。

基本的にはデス＆スラッシュメタル系にカテゴライズされるかと思いますが、凡庸なバンドとは一線も二線も画しているのが、変拍子を多用したテクニカルなドラム、リズムに複雑に絡むギターとベース。デス声がなければほとんどプログレやジャズロックではないかと思えるほど、高度なテクニックと複雑な曲構成が特徴的です。一歩間違えると、Dream Theaterあたりに通じます。デス声にさほど抵抗を感じないジャズ／フュージョン系のファンなら、一度は聴いていただきたいほどの完成度を誇っています。

個人的な興味の焦点はPaul MasvidalとJason Gobelという２人のギタリストのプレイ。音を聴く限り、どちらが主導権を握っているかはわかりませんが、例によって例のごとくアラン・ホールズワースやスコット・ヘンダーソンあたりのテクニカル系ギタリストから強い影響を受けたソロが、縦横無尽に暴れまくっています。ギター好きにとっても、けっこうなご馳走がたくさん詰まっています。

オリジナル盤は8曲収録で30数分というミニアルバムのような作品ですが、2004年にはリミックスバージョンなどを追加した全14曲構成のエクスパンド・バージョンも発売されています。

美しさをメロディアスでなくテクニカル面で全て表現した感じの超無機質な破壊的アルバムです。超傑作テクニカルデスアルバムですね。
ただ普通のメロデスとは似て非なるものなので、メロデス嫌いで聞いてない方は一度お試しあれ。

DEATHの一部メンバーが参加してるようなので、基本的にはDEATHの複雑なパートをより推し進めたらこんな感じのアルバムになるんでしょうか？こっちの方が独自性が際立っており個人的には好きですが。

93年発表の1st。この後、再結成し新作を出すとは誰も思っていなかったに違いない。

Cynicの音楽性はわかりやすく言うとフュージョンをベースにしたプログレッシヴ・ロックにHR/HMのテイストをあくまで「要素」として加えた異色のサウンドだ。

数学的な変拍子アプローチを楽曲の中で違和感無くサラリと聴かせるテクニックはもはや匠の技と言っても良いだろう。

パート毎に意図的にテンポを変え曲に躍動感を与えている点は、まず他のBandでは見受けられない手法だ。(HR/HMに限定するが)

エッジの効いたリフとフュージョンベースのテクニカルなレガートプレイが炸裂するGuitar、フレットレスとチャップマン・スティックにより奏でられる多彩なBass、変則的なリズムを叩き出すDrums、ヴォコーダーを多用したクリーンVocal、デスVoiceに絡むフィメールVocal…今聴いても決して色褪せない、いや、むしろCynicの斬新さを改めて実感させられるアルバムだ。

未聴の方は是非聴いて下さい。
本当の意味でプログレッシヴな音世界が此処にあります。
