Konk was recorded over a six week period at the tail-end of 2007 in Ray Davies Konk Studios in north London, plus a week at Los Angeles Sound Factory. The sessions once again united the group with esteemed producer Tony Hoffer (Beck/Air/The Fratellis). Explaining how he came to suggest the album title, guitarist Hugh says, I just started thinking how cool the studio is, and how much of a part of our sound it is.

Konk features twelve tracks. Theres Gap which is classic Kooks, and Shine On which finds Luke exploring hitherto unchartered lyrical territory over the loveliest of melodies. Its destined to become another lynchpin in The Kooks live set. First single Always Where I Need To Be is a tumbling rocker with a do-do-do, do-do-do-do refrain that might just be the catchiest thing theyve ever done. Sway and Mr Maker are other album highlights.

ほぼ同時期にラスト・シャドウ・パペッツとケイジャン・ダンス・パーティーのアルバムもリリースされたわけですが、個人的にはこのクークスの2ndが一番好きですね。どのアルバムもそれぞれいい出来なんですけど、クークスのロマンティシズムの純度の高さと、衒いのない王道ポップス＝歌謡曲としての完成度はずば抜けてると思います。
聴く人の好みにもよりますが、ラスト・シャドウ・パペッツはどこかアート志向が強いと言いますか、ちょっと洗練され過ぎな感があって日常で聴くには少し敷居が高い気がします。ケイジャンはもう青春の一枚って感じの蒼さ・瑞々しさが若者向きかなと。そしてクークスですが、誤解を恐れずに言うなら、もうUKインディとかロックの枠を超えた歌謡曲レベルのキャッチーさと、市井の人々の心を鷲づかみにする哀愁あるメロディがじわじわ染み込んでくる国民的な傑作です。ロックファンからすれば評価が分かれるところかもしれませんが、ポピュラーなという意味においてはどの世代の心にも響くすばらしいアルバムだと思います。あまり話題性がない分セールス的にはどうなのかわかりませんが、じわじわ売れていくタイプの作品なんじゃないでしょうか。コールドプレイやマルーン5、ジェイムズ・ブラントくらい日本でも売れて欲しいですね。

天才的なメロディセンスを持っていながらも
曲作りにまったく力みや気負いのようなものが
感じられないため、非常にたたずまいは自然である。
シンプルなデザインのようで実は緻密な計算が
織り込まれているデザイナーズプロダクトの
ようである。この若さでこれはすごい。

親しみやすいグッドメロディの連続なのに
どの曲も異常に耐久力が高い。
まったく驚くしかない作品である。

決してブレない安定感を感じさせる
センスの塊のようなバンド。
どの曲でもその高いクオリティに
思わず唸ってしまうほどである。

おおげさでなく全曲シングル級のクオリティで
聴く人ごとにフェイヴァリットが
バラけそう。つまりとんでもない作品ってことである。

　バンドの中心人物であるルークはコールドプレイに例えていたが、個人的にはストロークスが『ファースト・インプレッション・オブ・アース』で見せた飛躍に似ていると思う。それは単にバンドの存在がよりビッグになったということだけではなくて、メンバーの突破への意志が作品に見事に反映され、それが音そのものに強烈な鮮やかさを与えたという意味において、である。
　ゆっくりと、でも確実に支持を増やしジワジワと売れ広がっていった前作『インサイド・イン／インサイド・アウト』は結果的にダブル・ミリオンを獲得したという。あのアルバムの時点でザ・クークスの鳴らす音はすでに完成していて、個人的に彼らのキモはわかりやすいメロディをそれだけでは終わらせないクールな「効き」だと思っている。“マッチボックス”や“ナイーヴ”を聴けばわかっていただけるのではないだろうか。本作は、その「効き」をメロディに維持させたまま、熱い普遍にグッと近づいた良いアルバムに仕上がっている。今なお勢いを失わないUKインディ・ギター・ロックの中で、前作のクークスのイメージにはどこか冷めた態度で他のバンドからは距離をとっているような感があったのだが、本作の熱気はすごい。“ドゥー・ユー・ワナ”“ギャップ”“スウェイ”などではこれまでのクークスにはなかったダイナミズムが爆発していて、思わずむせ返りそうになる。それはもう「インディ」なんていうこぢんまりとしたシーンのものではなくて、明らかに「メジャー」なものだ。本作でクークスはコールドプレイやオアシスのいるイギリスの正当なロックの地平にまで一気に漕ぎ出した、と言っても過言ではない。アクモンだケイジャンだと騒がしい今のUKロックの中で、ロックの正当性を感覚的に叩き出せる若いバンドいるのは非常に頼もしい。年内に新作リリースの噂が囁かれるザ・ヴューにも期待です。
