映画の撮影技術で最も基本的なものに“カットつなぎ”があります。様々なシーンをカットとしてつなぎ合わせることによって，瞬時に時間的な経過や空間を表現することができます。
例えば，「家を出るシーン」の次に「目的地のシーン」をつなげれば，移動時間が省略され，その間の出来事は視聴者の想像力に委ねられることになります。
一方，１シーン１カットという手法は，視聴者に臨場感と緊張感を継続させ，視聴者をその時空に引き入れるという効果を持っています。本作の相米慎二監督は，この長回しの１シーン１カットを実に効果的に使用する監督として知られています。
本作では，房次郎が俊一の喫茶店を訪ねるシーンやマグロを捕えようとするシーンにこの手法が使われていますが，違和感はなく，適度の緊張感を保っています。ただ，この手法では役者の力量がかなりのウエイトを占めますので，キャスティングが重要となります。本作では緒形拳がほぼ完璧にこれらのシーンをやり遂げており，役者としてのすごさに感動します。
作品的には“マグロを釣る”という行為自体はあまり意味が無いようですが，相米慎二監督の作品ということになると，この行為は“生死をかけたもの”へと変化します。一瞬にして生から死へと転がり落ちる可能性のあるところで生きる人々，そのような人々を彼は捉えようとしているのです。
本作は，何度か映画化が試みられた末に断念されてきた，吉村昭の原作を相米慎二監督が壮大なスケールで描きあげた傑作で，下北半島最北端の漁港を舞台に，巨大マグロとの死闘に命をかけた男と，ひたすら寡黙に待ち続ける女たちの壮絶なドラマです。

　長回しで、ワンシーン・ワンカットを撮っていく手法は、俳優の演技の途切れなく時間の流れの不自然さがないという意味では映画作家にとって作品の質を高める効果もあるのだろうが、観客にとっては無用な緊張感を強制されてしまう面も持っており、個人的にはこの手法に固執しすぎる相米慎二監督が好きではなかった。
　しかし、この作品だけは別格で、有名な緒方拳のマグロ釣りのシーンも含めて、ワンシーン・ワンカットで撮った方が効果的な場面が多いこと、この映画以前の作品ではティーンエイジャーを主人公にしていたが、本作では緒方拳をはじめ佐藤浩市、夏目雅子、十朱幸代など本格的な演技のできる俳優をそろえたこともあって非常に質の高い作品となった。特に夏目雅子の美しさ、緒方拳の男らしさ、佐藤浩市の事故の悲劇性（この場面は凄まじい）が忘れがたい。
