ジミー･スミス、1972年2月8日アメリカはロサンジェルスでのライブ音源。 1962年から1973年まで在籍したヴァーヴの中で最後の録音となった作品 (1995年に再びヴァーヴに復帰)。ライブ盤ならではの緊張感溢れる演奏は聴くものを瞬時に引き込んでいく。

本作の素晴らしさは圧倒的なまでのグルーヴ感であり、難解さは感じないにも関わらず飽きの来ない、初心者から上級者までを惹きつける誘引力である。これらは現在に至っても色褪せることなく輝いており、 ソウライブを始めとしたジャムバンドに継承されているといえるだろう。

現代の視点でこの作品を聴きなおしてみると、スピード感溢れる 1曲目「Sagg Shootin' His Arrow」や6曲目「Slow Down Sagg」に言いようもない新鮮さを感じ、熱くならざるを得ない。これが30年以上も前の音と誰が思うであろうか。 2曲目から5曲目はそれに比べるとテンポが遅いせいか多少時代を感じさせるが、それでも古臭くて聴けないということはない。

メンバーについてはジミー･スミスのオルガンプレイはいうまでもないが、サイドの演奏も素晴らしい。アーサー･アダムスのワウを使ったギタープレイはオルガンの音を際立たせ、ウィルトン･フェルダー(後にクルセイダースのオリジナルメンバーとなる。) のベースはジミー･スミスにオルガンのペダルを使わせないだけのものを感じさせる。

どんな解説書にも書いてあるかと思うが、グルーヴを感じるという意味でこの作品の右に出るものはないと思われる。近年、ビースティーボーイズが「Root Down」をサンプリングの元ネタにしたことから本作がロック方面のリスナーにも聴かれるようになったとのこと。是非とも多くの方に聞いていただきたい作品である。

ロックファンも満足できる1枚です。
何故なら表題曲がビースティボーイズの名曲モトネタなのです。
ルートダウンのベースのイントロ鳥肌もんです。
もちろん他の曲も熱い演奏でカッコよく、ジミースミスのプレイとか聴き入ってるとキングクリムゾンやピンクフロイドを聴いてるときと同じ感覚になるのは僕だけでしょうか？

結構ヒップホップやジャズも好きで聴くのですが、スタンダードなモノとかどうしても眠くなってしまいます。
結構こういう人多いですよね？
根がロックでジャズなんかも聴いてみたい人にオススメです。
で、気に入ったらハンクモブレイやリーモーガンなんかもイケますよ。

すばらしい作品です。でも5曲目をよく聴いてると「ウァー」という低い声(客なのか?)が聞こえるてくるのは気のせいでしょうかなんかやたら気になります。
