2005年前半の締めくくりに出した『Mesmerize』に続き、後半を締めくくる『Hypnotize』は、システム・オブ・ア・ダウンの最高の時間を完成させている。この2枚のアルバムはほぼ完璧な統一体を形づくり、ロサンジェルス出身の彼らを、スマッシング・パンプキンズやピンク・フロイドらに仲間入りさせている。システム・オブ・ア・ダウンは、現代のロック・アルバムの性質という従来の概念に挑戦する手の込んだ作品を作りだした。実際面でも、彼らはとにかくリスナーに激しいアクトを見せてくれる。ハードに攻撃し、円熟したメタリカのようにヘッドバンギングの波を呼び起こすし、ミニットメンやデッド・ケネディーズのように考えることを要求してくる(ボーカルのサージ・タンキアンの荒っぽいわめき声は、デッド・ケネディーズを率いるジェロ・ビアフラを彷彿とさせる)。このアルバムの前半は、今年のメインストリームの流れを汲んだ乱暴で完璧、ダイレクトなロックンロールを取りあげている。「Attack」、「Kill Rock `n' Roll」、「Tentative」、「U-Fig」がこの突撃をリードし、「Holy Mountains」がこの叙事詩、最後の挑戦の時へと私たちを優美に誘っていく。「She's Like Heroin」(フランク・ザッパの『三文オペラ』のアイデア)や「Lonely Day」と言った後半の曲では、前半のような集中力が持続できていないが、『Mesmerize』と『Hypnotize』合わせて、この10年のヘヴィ・ロック決定版のアルバムに数えられることは、間違いない。

toxicity以来の最高傑作だと思います。
インパクトに欠ける曲は少ないかもしれません。


今回もダロンが歌いまくってます。
だが、それがいい。
正直mezmerizeの時はウザいと思ったのですが今回はハマっています。
ダロンの声は泣きメロに凄くマッチしていると思いました。
サージの低音にダロンの高音ヴォーカルが生み出すハーモニーは感情が伝わってくる印象でした。

mezmerizeとの2部作ということなので併せて鑑賞すると良いかも知れません。
そうして聴いた時、ラストのsoldier sideにやられました。

彼らは非常にメッセージ性が強いバンドだと思うのですが、メロディアスになったのは如何にリスナーに訴えかけるか考えたゆえの音楽的変化ではないのでしょうか。
彼らの言う「アート」の一部なのかもしれません。
私は非常に気に入りました。

初めはパッとしなかったのですが聴きこむと良さが出て来ました。
経験上このようなアルバムは数年経っても時折聴くことになるでしょう。

但し、ハードコアさを求められていたら合わないかもしれません。
サージは吼えてません。
soadの音楽以前の世界観が好きな方にオススメなアルバムです。

ひたすらショッキングなパワーがあった彼ららしからぬアルバムと言えます。変態度はおさえられてよりメロディアスに、よりエモーショナルに変貌。アルバムを通してのコンセプトが素晴らしく、特にシメの曲"Soldier Side"は、前作のMezmerizeを聴いた方にとっては感動的。

・・・なんだけれども。
強烈なインパクトをもたらした1st、2ndとは一味違う雰囲気を持った作風なので、Mezmerizeを聴いて「・・・アレ？」と思ってしまった人には胸を張っておすすめする事が出来ません。逆に言えば、Mezmerizeが気に入っている人ならば間違いなくおすすめの一品です。

ちなみに初回限定についてくるDVDはMezmerize/Hypnotizeの制作ドキュメント（DVD自体に字幕がついていない。訳詩の一番後ろにその会話内容の訳がついている形式。）＋ B.Y.O.B と Question! のPV。ドキュメンタリーはそこまで面白いものではないのでおまけだと思っておいたほうが吉。

良いです。
Mezmerizeも十分に衝撃的でしたが、さらにスケールアップしたような
感じを受けました（曲自体は同時期に作られたようですが）。
MezmerizeのSoldier Side(Intro)から始まり、Hypnotizeの
Lonely Day → Soldier Sideで終わるこの構成は鳥肌ものです。
歌詞がまたイイんだこれが！！
ということで、Mezmerizeを聞いてない方は先にそちらを聞くことをお勧めします。
どちらも必聴です！
