ワンダと巨像の開発チームが手がけた前作・ICOでは音楽を大島ミチルさんが担当し、どこか非現実的で足が空中に浮いたような独特のすばらしい世界観を演出してくれました。一方このワンダと巨像の音楽は、ガメラなどで有名な大谷幸さんが担当し、ある意味ICOとは180度違う土や血のにおいを感じられる、まさにサブタイトル通り「大地の咆哮」を感じられる音楽になっています。

ワンダ（主人公）が禁断の地を旅するシーンや、巨大な像と戦うシーン、そして壮絶な結末を迎えるシーンをより濃くプレイヤーの心に語りかける絶妙な音楽たちがつまっています。

よくゲームのサントラでは、数小節の効果音に近いようなメロディーが収録されていないことがありますが、このサントラではそれらがすべて納められている非常に密度の濃いCDとなっています。ただこれだけ多くの曲を収録したことから、1曲あたりの長さが短くなってしまい、1ループちょっとでフェードアウトしてしまうものが多いのが残念でした。

壮大かつどこか悲壮感のただよう異世界の音楽。ゲームをやった人なら、1曲ごとに自分のプレーしたシーンが甦り、エピローグの曲では涙するでしょう。すばらしい音楽です。

ゲームを制覇した人へのご褒美とも言えるサウンドトラックです。
アグロと駆け抜けた広大なマップを思い起こすことが出来るでしょう。
トラック12,13を繋げて聴いている時は巨像相手にやっと優勢を握った時のワクワク感がよみがえります。
ゲームの演出が話題のヴィジュアルだけではなく、ここぞという時にしか流れないサウンドも大きな力を秘めていることを実感する一枚です。

本来、映画にせよゲームにせよ、BGMとは「見せるべき視覚情報の
添え物」に過ぎない。だが優れたBGMは、それを耳にしただけで
聴く人の脳裏にその場面の映像を鮮明に浮かび上がらせるものである
（もちろん映像の方もそれなりに印象深いものである必要があるが）。

その意味では、「ワンダと巨像」をプレイした人がこのサントラを聴けば、
恐らく大部分が巨像との激闘の数々を克明に思い起こすのではなかろうか。
このゲームは、人間である主人公が巨像を倒すために「まずどうやって
巨像の体によじ登るか？」が一つのテーマになっているのだが、
ゲーム中でも地上をかけずり回っていた主人公が巨像に取り付くと、
そこで音楽も別の曲に変わる。したがってこの音楽に耳を傾ければ、
その時の主人公の状況まではっきりと思い出し、プレイに思いを馳せる
ことができるに違いない。これはBGMとしてはとても理想的なことで、
ゲーム制作者・作曲者双方にとって幸福なことだと思う。

「平成ガメラ三部作」の音楽を手がけたことで知られる大谷幸氏ということで
「巨大生物（？）つながり」を連想したが、実際の起用理由はそう単純では
ないらしい（ライナーノーツより）。しかし巨像という圧倒的存在との戦いを
否応なく盛り上げてくれる勇壮な曲の数々は、怪獣映画のそれとしても
充分通用しそうだ。民俗楽器を用いたもの悲しいテーマ曲もいい。
