　これは凄い。素直に凄いと思えるアルバムです。

　盲目のシンガーソングライター、ラウル・ミドンのデビ
ュー作。まずギターが凄い。僕は多少ギターをかじった経
験があるんですが、どうやって弾いてるのか全くわからな
い（笑）。バラード調の曲なんかはさすがに少しはわかる
けど、このテクニックの高さは並じゃないです。

　それから、曲が素晴らしいです。アルバムを通して捨て
曲が一曲もない。メロディーがとにかく綺麗だし、歌唱力
もあります。ゲストでスティービー・ワンダー、ジェイソ
ン・ムラーズが参加していますが、歌を比べてみても全く
見劣り（聴き劣り？）しません。これがデビュー作とは思
えないですね。本当に。

　アメリカでは、既にかなり高い評価を受けているらしい
です。それも当然だと思います。自分は音楽好きで、かな
りよく聴く方ですが、一枚のアルバムでこれだけ衝撃を受
けたのは本当に久しぶりです。そのせいか、今は冷静に評
価することができないですね。消化できていないというか。
落ち着いたらまたレビューします（笑）。

　とにかく、たくさんの人に聴いてもらいたいアルバムで
す!!

「奏でる」でもなく、「かき鳴らす」でもない。
弦が「叩かれ」、「弾かれる」。

弦楽器とは思えない。そう、彼が自分で言っている通り、音の出方がまるで、ドラムなのだ。
こんな演奏、コンピュータにだってできやしない。そして極め付けに、地に足の着いた希望を高らかに歌い上げる、ソウルフル・ヴォイス……

今の時代にあって、構成要素のなにもかもが単純だからこそ聞き惚れられる。ラウル・ミドンは、そんな底力だけで出来た、恐るべきミュージシャンである。

１曲だけ選べと言うならば、間違いなく主題曲"State of Mind"の名前が挙げられるけれども、それをおして私が敢えて推挙したいのは、永遠のライヴ名盤を遺したキーボーディスト、ダニー・ハサウェイへ捧げられた挽歌"Sittin' in the Middle"。

ライヴ・アーティストとして大成したいという彼の気持ちが、この曲から容易にうかがい知ることができる。ダニー・ハサウェイの"Everything the Everything"や"The Ghetto"を聴いたことがある人間なら、このミドンの「本気」を、わかってくれるはずだ。

21世紀R&Bに、早々と歴史を刻んでしまいそうな彼のファースト・アルバム。「聴かなければ損をする」とは、彼のような楽曲にとっておくべき文句だろう。まったく、これを聴かなければ、己の音楽人生を誇る者にとっての大きな損失となるに違いない。

カスタマーレビューを書いたことがない私が、キーボードを打っている。
そうしたくなるほど超鳥肌もの。
ギタープレイとボーカルそれだけでラウル・ミドンのSOULを感じてしまった。
即買い間違いなしです。数々の巨匠から認められた訳は一度耳にすれば解ります。
