Album Details

2005 album born out of the ashes of Planet Us, the project features Journey's guitar player Neal Schon, vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, bassist Marco Mendoza and drummer Virgil Donati. World Play is released in a limited edition luxury ecolbook version for the entire initial pressing which adds the bonus DVD (NTSC/Region 0) featuring the video of 'New Position' and 'Another World' plus band members interview and behind the scenes footage. Frontiers Records.

実力者がそろったバンドのデビュー作。
本作品でのニール・ショーンのギターは、
ジャーニーで多用するクリーンなトーンではなく、
ブルージー（“TRIAL BY FIRE”での‘CASTLES BURNING’
あるいは“ARRIVAL"での‘ALL THE THINGS'のよう）
な音を聞かせる曲が多いです。
また音質がジャーニーよりヘヴィであり、
ギターを弾きまくっている様はHARDLINE
に通じるものもあると思います。
バンドのメンバー全員が名手であり、
個々人がそれぞれの技量を主張していながら楽曲の
流れを乱すことがないのはさすがだと思わせます。

Neal Schon (Journey), Jeff Scott Solo(Talisman/Solo/Malmsteen), Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy/Whitesnake) and Virgil Donati (Steve Vai/Ring of Fire). というメンバーによるアメリカンロックアルバム。曲も良く練られている感が強く乗り乗りのロックンロールナンバーからミドルテンポのへヴィナンバー・バラードに至るまで安心して聴くことが出来ます。強力なリズム隊の上に乗る、艶の有る表現力豊かなボーカルラインとジャーニーとは又違う弾きまくりを聞かせるニールのギターもカッコよいです。CDは裏ジャケットに１８曲入りの様に記載されていますが、１６・１７のソウルスペースは無音状態ですので実際は１６曲入りです。

　ジャーニーのニール・ショーンを中心にジェフ・スコット・ソート(vo)、マルコ・メンドーサ(b)、ヴァージル・ドナティ(ds)の4人で結成されたスーパー・バンド。ジャーニーよりヘヴィなギターに焦点を据えたアメリカン・ハード・ロック・アルバムで、どちらかというとヴァン・ヘイレンのファン向きかもしれない。あれほどパーティー・ロック的でもないけど。

　出だしは正直、地味だが、全19曲(内2曲は無音)とアルバムが進むに連れ、ヴァラエティに富んだ良質な楽曲に引き込まれていく。まずは6を聴いてもらいたい。ジェフらしいファンキーなリフ、ヴァースから伸びやかでキャッチーなコーラスという歌メロの流れとそれに乗せられるように自由奔放に弾きまくるニールのソロ…これだけでこのコラボレーションは大成功だと感じると思う。この他、ツェッペリンの「KASHMAR」的な4、唯一、スティーヴ・ペリーを彷彿とさせるバラード13にア・カペラの14、力強さとキャッチーさを兼ね備えたハード・ロック10、11、12、15も素晴らしい。もろにR&Bの18や民俗音楽的なアカペラ9は苦手だけど。
　ボーナス曲の19は13のアコースティック・ヴァージョンだが、この曲のみ共作にサミー・ヘイガーの名が見られる。
　リズム・セクションも強力で、特にこれまではプログレ、ジャズ・フュージョン寄りの音楽の中で実力を発揮してきたＶ・ドナティがこうしたストレートなハード・ロックの中で技をどのように聴かせるのかというのを聴き込むのも楽しい。
　メンツに恥じない充実作。
