イギリスではパンク、ニューウェイブが旋風しジョニーロットンが「ロックは死んだ」と叫びまさしく大転換期に日本ではいち早く最先端サウンドを取り入れたのが、ＹＭＯとジュリー！随所に散りばめられたシンセのコズミックサウンドに当時まだ駆け出しライターの糸井重里の斬新な詩がテクノの時代の到来を告げた大ヒット超問題作！ロキシーのブライアンフェリーへＴＯＫＹＯＪＯＥの返答をし、後に大島渚より坂本龍一よりも先にでデビットボウイの相手役に抜擢されたのは当時ジュリーは大転換期だったことの証明。またその曲間に収められたバラード曲も録音技術の発展でジュリー歌唱力が余すことなく素晴らしい楽曲とマッチ！

　当時大晦日から元旦にかけての「ゆく年くる年」は、NHKに対抗して民放全局が一致団結して制作していた。当時の「ゆく年くる年」はセイコーがスポンサードしていて、深夜零時のカウントダウンはかなりの盛り上がりを見せていた。　
　1980年1月1日、セイコーが0時の時報を告げたあと、電飾付きのパラシュートを背負ったジュリーが登場。加瀬邦彦のドライブ感のある曲に糸井重里の時代感のある詞を乗せた「TOKIO」を熱唱した。80年代の幕が切って落とされたのである。まだ糸井重里も知る人ぞ知るだったし、ジュリーもスターの絶頂にいた。
「安らぎ知らない遊園地がスイッチひとつで真っ赤に燃え上がる」
　走り出したら止まらない、人々の不安とその裏腹としての喧噪、そしてその末路としてのバブル崩壊を予見するような歌詞。楽曲はテクノ入ってるし（あくまでアレンジレベルの話。しかし加瀬邦彦はもっと評価されるべきメロディメーカーだ）、ジャケットはポップアート風で時代を感じさせる。
　今でもたまにカラオケで歌うが、勢いよく歌い切った後に、ふと、切ない気持ちにさせる、そんな一曲である。

映画「太陽を盗んだ男」と同時期のアルバム。ノッているジュリーが楽しめる。ついつい「TOKIO」に耳が行ってしまうが、トータルによくまとまった素晴らしいアルバム。ジャケのセンスも秀逸。
