   哀しい映画である。貧しい長屋に住む浪人は、かつて父の世話を受けた男に士官を頼みに行くが、今日も門前払い。真面目で融通の利かない夫を持つ女房は、経緯をうすうす感じながら黙って耐える。長屋では首つり自殺があった。
   楽しい映画である。その日暮らしの職人たちにとって、長屋はいわばワンダーランド。首つり自殺の供養を理由に今日も酒盛りが始まる。髪結いは嫁入りを迫られている質屋の娘を誘拐する。銭金のためでなく、意地を見せたかったのだ。ちゃっかり者の家主は、ここぞとばかりに質屋と交渉し、五十両で娘を無事に帰してやる。その五十両でまた今夜も酒盛りが始まる。
   現在にも通じる、殺伐たる時代。タイトル通り紙風船のように儚い、人のこころの悲喜こもごもを、じっと見つめた天才・山中貞雄の視線の優しさ、温かさときたら。（斉藤守彦）

小津安二郎、溝口健二と並び称されながらも、若くして戦病死した山中貞雄の遺作となった人間ドラマ。貧乏浪人・又十郎は亡父の世話で出世した藩の重役に仕官を頼むが、無碍に断られてしまう。そんな時、髪結いの新三から誘拐の協力を持ち掛けられる。

貧民街の助け合い、日本という国が１０％の富裕層と９０％の貧困層に分かれていた時代の悲哀が詰め込まれている。セットのリアルさに驚嘆しまた物語の斬新さに引き込まれる。人の死が日常の長屋では昨日恩を受けた人間だろうが、親しかった人間だろうが死んでしまえば後に残らない。自分のことで精一杯なのだ。感情を押し殺し、因習の中で生きていく。男女の恋愛なんて親の作為で成就する事なんてない。名も無き人々のたくさんの物語がオムニバス形式をとらずにつながっていく。脚本にしろ編集にしろ、恐るべき才能の持ち主である。

〜監督の山中貞雄の遺作にして３本しか現存しない作品の１本。他の２本の作品における笑いと娯楽性はなく、軍事時勢の影響か、冒頭の心中から始まり常に死がつきまとい、全編に充満し流れる悲壮感。のちの小津安二郎監督の赤いやかんのような、紙風船。実際の時代には紙風船はなかったと何処かで読んだ。でも全てが最後の紙風船が語る。映画のマジックを感じる〜〜。
何と美術考証としてあの天才画家、岩田専太郎が参加している。役者以外の長屋やたばこパイプに至るまで、よーく観て味わい尽くしたい。
山中監督がもし戦死しなければ、戦後一体どんな映画創ったんだろう？でも、彼の映画に対する情熱は、同じ日本の現役監督たち（北野、塚本、是枝、岩井等）に生き続けてると思う。
あくまで個人的意見だけど、日本はフランスやイタリアと並んで世界最高水準の映画を創作している国で、駄目と思ってるのは、以外にも日本人自体かもしれないな。あのゴダールが悔しがってるくらいだからね。
観たことないなら、騙されて、是非観て下さい（笑）。〜

本当にもっともっと山中監督の作品を見たいです。画面が（構図が）古さを一つも感じさせません。そして、作られた年代を考えれば、このＤＶＤの画質、また台詞の明瞭さはすばらしい。東宝ＤＶＤスタッフの皆さんに感謝の拍手を贈ります。これからもこの東宝のシリーズ、期待大ですね。
