ティム・バートン監督によるダニエル・ウォレスのビタースウィートな南部ゴシック小説の映画化。バートン初の正統派人間ドラマだと宣伝されているが、それは物語の寓話的な性格やイマジネーションの飛躍ぶりを無視したご都合主義的な言い方というものだろう。だが作曲家ダニー・エルフマンは、ところどころに仕込まれたダークで怪しい要素を充分に理解したうえで、この抑制の効いた不思議なスコアを書き上げた。
エルフマンがハリウッドのメインストリームを行くスター作曲家となったのは、コミックの映画化作品に付けた壮大なメロドラマ調のスコア（『Batman』、『Spider-Man』、『The Hulk』）によってだったが、長年のファンならご承知のように、彼が盟友バートンと組んだ時ほど豊かな表情を見せることは稀だ。ここでエルフマンが聴かせるスコアは、レイチェル・ポートマンの繊細な牧歌的感性とトーマス・ニューマンの不安でナゾめいたリズムをかけ合わせたような作風。スパイスとして、トゥワンギーなフィドルと、この映画に何度か登場するゴシック的なショック・シーンに対応した調べが加えられている。締めくくりは素敵にクレイジーな「Twice the Love （Siamese Twins Song）」だ。
