ディスカバリーチャンネルのシリーズは見応えのある物が多いが、私にとっては、これは「はずれ」の一つのように思える。しかし、モーツァルトの死因をコレクションしている人にはうってつけの作品かもしれないが、……。

150以上の死因が推測されているだけあって、この作品に登場する分析者たちの説明にはあまり説得力が感じられない。死因を決定づけるに足るだけの資料が決定的に不足している。私が現代人で、当時のヨーロッパの医療や衛生状態をあまり理解していない、あるいはモーツァルト自身の健康に対する意識を知らないということもあるが、どの分析者の死因の推測もこじつけのような印象を持ってしまう。

決定的な死因に関する資料が見つかって、その上でモーツァルトの死因がわかったならば別だが、今の段階では、150の中のいくつかを紹介されたに過ぎない物足りなさが漂う。

むしろいたずらに死因を推測するならば、天才的作曲家の死因は謎のままでもかまわないと思った。あるいは死因が完全に推測の域を超えないものだとして、モーツァルトの最期を物語にしてしまった方が、よほど楽しめる。たとえば、「アマデウス」のように。
