この作品の魅力は、なんと言ってもキャラクターの面白さと推理小説（ちょっとＢ級かも？）を読んでいる時のような楽しさとハラハラ感を味わえることだと思います。ロバート・レッドフォードとデブラ・ウィンガーの関わり合いが面白いです。そして、脇役ではありますが、ストーリー上のキーパーソンを演じているダリル・ハンナもなかなか良い味を出しています。ダリル･ハンナといえば、トム・ハンクスと共演した「スプラッシュ」を思い出す人もいるのではないでしょうか？今回はスプラッシュの恋する人魚役とは違い、殺された画家の娘であり、ミステリアスな雰囲気を持ったアーティスト役で出ています。

ロバート・レッドフォードは検事役、デブラ・ウィンガーはダリル・ハンナの弁護人役です。ひょんなことから同じ事件を探ることになった二人は、次々と被害者が残した絵画にまつわる謎を解き明かし、罪に問われている被告（ダリル・ハンナ）の無実を晴らそうとします。そこに真犯人らしき人物の妨害が入って・・・結末に至ります。

「一体その絵画にはどんな秘密があるのか？」

観ていく内になんとなくストーリーが想像できそうなのですが、それでも楽しんで見ることが出来ます。主人公達の魅力もさることながら、ちょっと時代遅れの探偵小説っぽさが新鮮です。この映画を観ていると、８０年代のアメリカのドラマ「探偵レミントン＆スティール」を連想してしまいます。このドラマも大好きですが「夜霧のマンハッタン」もテンポの良いストーリーで飽きがきません。依然ＬＤで持っていたのですが、今度は是非ＤＶＤで揃えたいと思います。
