なんといってもハナ肇である。映画のラストを、俳優の演技でこれほど泣かせた作品は、他に類を見ない。

それは、倍賞千恵子も主役の健さんをも霞めるほどの珠玉の名演だ。それは、ある意味ドンデン返しとしても良い位、凄い。

「幸福の黄色いハンカチ」よりこちらのほうが数段好きだ。

この映画の最大の見せ場は、何と言ってもラストシーンのハナ肇である。　護送中の健さんとは直接話はできないが、倍賞千恵子の心境を健さんに伝える感動のシーン。　いつ見ても涙が止まりません。　決して「後で刑務所に面会に行けばいいのに」などと考えてはいけません。　母（倍賞千恵子）子（吉岡秀隆）２人が健さんに対し、徐々に心を開いていく演出は「さすが山田洋次！」と言ってしまいます。　私にとって健さん映画のサイコー傑作と思っております。　皆さんも是非この映画を見て泣いてください(ToT)

２５年ぐらい前の中学生の頃にこの映画の封切りを見に行って、以来高倉健さんのファンになりました。美しい北海道の風景、それに映える健さんのダイナミック、かつ情感のこもった演技、そして皆さんご指摘のハナ肇さんのあのラストシーン…何回観てもお約束のように繰り返し涙が出てきます。しかし自分の息子が当時の吉岡秀隆さんとおなじような年代になった昨今は、健さんが武志（吉岡）と別れるシーンでの武志の気持ちと息子のことを重ねるようになり、泣けるシーンが増えてしまいました。家族と一緒に観るとみっともないので、夜中に一人でこっそり観てボロボロ泣いています（笑）。傑作です。
