８６年の発表当時は、それこそカセットテープが擦り切れるほど聴き込んだ愛聴盤だったのですが、今回のリマスター盤を聴いて「あれ、こんなんやったかな？」と思ってしまいました。
一応このアルバムはこの人の代表作なのですが、当時は尖鋭的とされていたテクノロジーと生音をうまく融合させる音づくりや、民族的リズムを取り入れるアプローチなどは、今では当たり前のことになってしまっています。時代に追い付かれてしまったというか、風化してしまっているような印象を受けました。
一番違和感があったのは、元々五曲目だった「イン・ユア・アイズ」を最後に持ってきていることです。このことでアルバムB面の流れは全く別のものになってしまい、「マーシィ・ストリート」の叙情性や「ビッグ・タイム」のアタック感などが損なわれてしまったように感じます（４曲目の「ザット・ボイス・アゲイン」は正直穴埋めのような曲なので、そこからの流れを引きずるとしんどい）。
また、そのことにより元々ボーナストラック的な扱いだった「ディス・イズ・ザ・ピクチャー」が正式な８曲目になってしまったのも納得がいきません。もともとこの曲はどう聴いてもP・ガブリエルの曲というよりは共演のローリー・アンダーソンの曲という感じで、音の感触や雰囲気もこのアルバムから浮いています（よくできたミニマル・ニューウェイブ・ファンクなのですが）。
リマスターについても、普通音が良くなると感動が増すものですが、この作品については正直微妙です。オリジナルが持っていた深めのリバーブが取り払われ、一つ一つの音の輪郭がはっきりしたことで逆に神秘的なアンビエンスやスピリチュアルな深みが失われたように感じました。
これから聴いてみようという人は出来たらオリジナル盤の方を聴いてもらいたいです。
ポリスの『シンクロニシティ』なんかは今でも風化するどころか、リマスターで更にすごいアルバム度が増したというのに。一体何が違うのだろう。

3作目、4作目は強烈なクオリティーを持った超傑作だったが、商業的には成功しなかった。成功に飢えていたPeterはエスニックさを薄め、庶民的路線を加えることになった。それが大当たり！。シングルカットされた「Sledgehammer」はユニークなプロモーション・ビデオがMTVで何度も何度も放送されたこともあり、シングル大ヒット、それにアルバムも売れに売れ、彼はようやく一般庶民（？）が認知するビッグ・アーチストになった。

とは言え、彼がかつて在籍したGENESISがプログレ・バンドからポップ・バンドに退化したような変化ではなく、彼らしい独特の世界は息づいている。

アルバムはThe Policeのドラマー、Stewart Copelandが刻む、彼独特のハイハットの音から始まる「Red rain」で幕を開ける。この曲は「悲痛な魂の叫び」を感じさせるちょっとダークな曲だが、続く「Sledgehammer」とのコントラストがちょうどよい。3曲目の「Don't give up」はKate Bushとのデュエット作品。彼女の憂いを帯びた声にうっとりとさせられるバラード曲に仕上がっている。後半の「Big time」はホーンセクションを加えた元気あふれる作品。

なお、これまで「In your eyes」は5曲目に収録されてたが、今回のリマスター版ではアルバムのラストに収録されている。実はこれがもともとPeterが考えていた曲順で、発表当時はLPの収録時間の制限のためA面の一番最後に収録せざるを得なかったとのこと。確かに今までの「This is the picture」でアルバムが終わるのはあまりにもインパクトがなさすぎたため、今回の変更でアルバムの印象が変わると思う。

"So"を素晴らしいものにしている要因として，そのサウンド プロダクションが挙げられるだろう。個々の楽器の音は明確ながらも，全体としての音は幽玄で深い響きを湛えている。だからこそ，その中から屹立してくるゲイブリエルの声の力強さが際立つのだ。

幽玄な美しさを湛えた音楽は少なくない。また，力強い音楽も少なくない。しかし，その両方を備えた音楽は，稀有な存在だ。Soは，その稀有な存在の一つだ。

リマスタ版になって，キーボードの音がよりくっきりしたような気がする。だが，それよりも嬉しいのは，"In Your Eyes"が曲順の最後になったことだ。一度この曲順で聴くと，もうこれ以外の曲順は考えられなくなる。
