   司馬遼太郎の同名原作をオールスターキャストでドラマ化した、関ヶ原を描いたドラマの決定版とも言うべき名作大型時代劇。病没した豊臣秀吉（宇野重吉）の遺志を一途な思いで引き継ごうとする五奉行の一人・石田三成（加藤剛）と、その機に乗じて天下取りをもくろむ徳川家康（森繁久弥）との息詰まる攻防が、利に走り、裏切りに終始した関ヶ原の合戦という一つの戦に収斂していく様とともにスケール盛大に描かれている。
   何にもまして特筆すべきは、名優ぞろいの豪華出演陣だ。もはや伝説となった多くの役者たちが適材適所の役を演じたことによって、この戦国絵巻はいっそうの重厚さを獲得している。中でも、いかなる時にも義の人であり続けた石田光成を熱演する加藤剛がうってつけのはまり役。理想のあり方を追い求めるがゆえに誰からも受け入れられない孤高が、光成のイメージ通りだ。クライマックスの関ヶ原の合戦の再現は、エキストラ3500人、馬500頭を動員したスペクタクル。まさに労作と呼ぶにふさわしい作品である。（麻生結一）

関ヶ原の戦いでは、徳川家康と石田三成が有名ですが、三成との友情を重んじ敗戦覚悟で西軍についた「大谷刑部少輔吉継」が武将では大好きで、この作品の中では多く登場していたので購入しました。あまりメジャーではありませんが、三成が不遇の時代からの親友で、豊臣政権時代には三成とともに活躍していた人物です。思慮深く、時の情勢をすぐさま読み取り、人徳も厚かった武将です。関ヶ原の戦いができたのもこの人物が三成の影として動いた感があります。三成が時の流れを読む力がなかったのも敗因と思えますが、「義」を重んじた戦いでもある関ヶ原の戦いを、この作品は実にリアルに表現していて、その時々の人間模様を特に重視して製作されたのだと思います。何度見てもあきません。個人的には、名将”大谷刑部少輔吉継”のファンです。

　いろいろな方がキャストについて絶賛されておりますが、中でも印象的なのは大谷吉継（刑部）役の高橋幸治。端正な顔を白頭巾で覆い、目を閉じた状態で演じていますが、声はよく通り、白頭巾のハンデを感じさせません。その彼が一瞬だけ「目」の演技をする（見てのお楽しみ）。その間が最高でした。NHK大河ドラマでは伝説の織田信長俳優として知られていますが、彼が演じた歴史上の人物で、もうひとつの代表作に入れてもよい位の名演であると思います。

出演者を何度も確認したくなるのは、この関ヶ原だけである。
森繁氏、三船氏、三國氏、辰巳氏、丹波氏ら大物俳優に加え、
文学座、俳優座、劇団民藝の看板俳優・女優が出演。
秀吉が宇野重吉で、よかった。「伝説の時代劇」というコピーに、偽りなし。

多くの人が語っているので、魅力を１点だけ挙げます。

たまに、好きなシーンだけ見たくなる時がある。
しかし途中でやめられず、最後まで見てしまう。
続きをみたくなる欲望に勝ったことは、一度もない。
